Working from Home: How to Create a DIY Workspace

Editor

In the spring of 2020, COVID-19 disease spread across states, countries and continents as wildfire. And in an attempt to contain the disease  (COVID-19) pandemic, states and countries across the world adopted “social distancing”.

Social distancing was a medium through which the disease could be most effectively prevented. Everyone became conscious of it and adhered to the order as measures were taken to apprehend offenders. This action affected  a lot of people and businesses as businesses were closed down, due to loss of jobs. This resulted in the switch of many individuals from onsite jobs to online (remote) jobs or even hybrid, (I.e both onsite and online).

Although not all kinds of jobs can be done remotely, an average youth has a stream of income from an online job, either through freelancing or any other. Therefore, to get efficient results as a remote worker, you need to consider your work space. It has to be as comfortable and work effective as possible so as to aid your productivity.

The conduciveness of your workspace has a major role to play on your income. There are certain things you should note while creating your workspace.

1. Ventilation

The room where you'll work must be properly ventilated. Why? Oxygen is one of the most essential needs of the brain and Carbon(IV) oxide, the most toxic. If proper measures are not taken to allow the inflow and outflow of these gases it might lead to suffocation. Aside from that, congestion limits how deep and fast you can think or brainstorm. For example, as a writer you'll experience writer's block more often in a congested workspace. Hence,  ensure your workspace is well ventilated and get an Air condition or at least a Fan.

2. Access to Electricity

Access to electricity can not be overemphasized as you'll constantly need to power your device as you work. There are several sources of electricity, just go for the one within the range of your budget. If you are in a country where the power supply is consistent, then this is not an issue. However, in most African countries, e.g Nigeria, the power supply isn't reliable, so you might have to get another source, like a solar panel or a generator.

3. Quietness

It is important to note that as much as you won't be physically present in an office working, your colleagues or bosses could call in at any time to get or give you  briefings on a job you're working on. For maximum concentration and focus, ensure your environment is not noisy. Quietness aids productivity at work and when your workspace is free of noise you will be able to brainstorm better and get better results.

Internet connection

As a remote worker, no job can be done without an internet connection. If the network provider you make use of isn't strong enough, you might consider getting another one or an internet connection booster. You can also make use of a wireless router that acts as a mobile Wi-Fi hotspot, e.g Mifi.

Safety

Ensure wherever you are citing your workspace is free of harm and danger. You can get a security door or burglary that helps secure the place.

Other things you would be needing in your workspace are:
  1. Table (it could be wooden, plastic, or foldable) and a chair.
  2. Backdrop/good background: This is necessary because of video calls and can be done with a nice crepe cloth material or a backdrop.
  3. Lightning: A table ring light can suffice for this or a light bulb. etc.

Lastly, your workspace can be in your house, an apartment outside your house, an office, or a shop. However, these things should be considered when creating your workspace.
