Sights and Sounds - A Historical Review of the Zulu Tribe

Editor

The Zulu Tribe comes from the merging of the Nguni community, an ethnic group in South Africa who were part of the Bantu migrations over the millennia with the Zulu Tribe itself which were basically a major clan in what is today's KwaZulu-Natal, founded in 1709 by Zulu KaMalan dela, which the leadership of Shaka joined together as a whole identity for the Zulu, which resulted into the tribe and nation being the largest in South Africa with a approximated population of 10 to 12 million persons inhabiting mainly in the province of KwaZulu-Natal. The KwaZulu-Natal was created in 1994 from the joining of KwaZulu with the province of Natal.

KwaZulu simply means a place created for the Zulu people due to apartheid was created in 1970 with Chief Mangosuthu Bathelezi being its Chief Minister, as the Bantu Homeland Citizenship Act provided that all Zulus become the people of KwaZulu, which made them lose their South African citizenship. KwaZulu includes many segregated pieces of land in the modern KwaZulu-Natal.  Bantustans, which are the available areas of  KwaZulu are being inhabited by hundreds of thousands Zulu people who were living on capitally acquired "black spots" outside of KwaZulu before being forced and dispossessed to the place, which were initially kept for the whites contingents. Having forcibly moved them to Bantustans, estimably 5.2 millions Zulu people lived in the rest of South Africa, as at 1993.

Zulu means "weather or heaven" in the Nguni languages, and its strength and growth was based on Shaka's rulership and that of his successors who brought development and success to it as a result of top-notch military tactics and organisation. The military was created around the Ukubuthwa which is 'to be enrolled' system which refused the initiation ceremonies for most of the part. Military regiments were created; ibutho sing, and amabutho piral, amakhanda plural, and ikhanda sing and each age-set or group of young men of the same age were assigned to the regiments according to the system. The gender that convinced Adam to take the forbidden fruit were also also subjected to Ukubuthwa. The amabutho were housed in military baracks, and the ikhada sing and amakhanda plural were located throughout throughout the kingdom and under the rulership of someone appointed by the king or a close relative.

The Zulu formed a well- strengthened state in 1816 under the leadership of Lida Shaka. A militarised system known as "Impi" featuring conscription, new weaponry, regimentation, a standing army, and battle tactics was built by Shaka. The expansion of Zulu was a result of the Mfecane known as"crushing" that depopulated large areas of South Africa. Shaka, during this period deployed am army regiment for raiding tribes on the Natal. Shaka was disobeyed by the army regiment under Mzilikazi as they made a plan to keep raiding up Natal, and forming another dialect of Zulu language which is referred to as Nordan Ndebele.

In 1878, around mid-Dec, 11 chiefs of the Zulu empire was giving an ultimatum under the Zulu the king, Cetshwayo to disband the army and accept British sovereignty. The king refused, and war started between his people and the African contingents of the British crown on January 12, 1879. Although they won an early victory for the at the Battle of Isandlwand on the 22nd of January, the British fought back and won the battle at Rorke's Drift and drifted the Zulu army by July at the Battle of Ulundi.

The king was captured, and after a month of his conquest, the battle separated the Zulu Empire into 13 "kinglets". The divided kinglets conflicted against one another until 1883 when the king was released and reinstated as the king over Zulu land. The fightings continued and the Zulu king was coerced to leave his kingdom by Zibhebhu who was one of the 13 kinglets and supported by Boer mercenaries. The king was killed in February 1884 by Zibhebhu's regime leaving his son, DinuZulu who was fifteen years old to mount the throne. Fighting between the kinglets didn't stop for years, until in 1897 when the land was imposed on fully by the British Colony of Natal.
