Transitioning into Tech: A Lucrative and Rewarding Path - Enioluwa Odunjo

Today, unlike a few years ago, being a 'Tech Bro or Tech Sis' is considered a lucrative profession. As someone who has been in the field for over four years, way before it became cool to be a techie, I can say that it does offer the opportunity to reach financial freedom quickly.

With many tech roles affording one the option to work flexibly and remotely, you can earn in different currencies from the comfort of your home. 

However, it's important to dispel the notion that going into tech is a shortcut to wealth, as portrayed by the media. While earning foreign currency is an enticing lure into the field, securing a substantial tech role may not be as easy as it seems. 

In a particular year I faced over 100 rejections before landing a single job offer. However that season of daily "Unfortunately" emails gave me the required knowledge and resilience to thrive in the field. The insights I gathered from that rejection experience and my eventual acceptance into a number of companies has equipped me to teach other aspiring tech professionals to transition into remote tech jobs. Here are key learnings to help you succeed:

1. Choose your path wisely

Research tech roles that align with your existing skills, leveraging skills you already have will ease your transition. For instance, a copywriter can easily pursue UX writing, and a marketer can explore growth marketing.

2. Dedicate time to Learning

Allow yourself 3-6 months to acquire the necessary skills. Remember, "Pursuit is proof of desire," so invest the required time and effort.

3. Conduct Smart Research

Analyze different job descriptions from various companies and identify commonalities. You'll notice recurring themes such as specific tools and requirements. Compile these and add to your skillset. As you progress, you will no longer need to consult job descriptions to determine your suitability for a role because you already qualify.

4. Build a Strong Portfolio and CV

This can't be overemphasized. Take the time to showcase your best work effectively. Your portfolio plays a pivotal role in opening doors and should not be rushed.

5. Embrace Rejection

Anticipate receiving some rejection emails before securing your first role. Developing a thick skin is essential, as hiring decisions involve various dynamics.
