Interview: How Do You Cope With Academics And Business On Campus?

Entrepreneurs are beginning to come up among students on various Campuses in Nigeria. With student entrepreneur, concerned students will have to add business with their academics on campus.

To boost the passion for business due to low unemployment rate in Nigeria, the State and Federal Ministry of Education have added vocational Subjects and Courses into the school curriculum.

At the Primary and secondary level, they have vocational skill subjects and Trade while the Varsities have vocational courses which are taught from level one to Two hundred level; depending on the School.

Daily News Report had interview with a student of University of Benin.  Tolulope Abayomi is a student of Political Science. Our Interview goes thus:

Question: How Do You Cope With Learning And Trading?

Guest: To me, my Academics and Business in School are much interwoven. Academics is like doing business; you transact by learning and you pay to School Management, same applicable to doing business on campus; you trade by rendering goods and services and get money in returns. Through academics; I learn, I also learn through my business.

Question: How About The Challenges?

Guest: To every UniBen Students; studying comes with its challenges, just like every other students in other Varsities. But, Uniben is coupled with lots of stress up and down which an average Student can testify to them. Looking at all these challenges, a serious student will have to face his academics squarely than business without allowing it affect Education.

Question: How Do You Juxtapose Your Business With Education

Guest: Juxtaposing my business with academics and challenges involved; I won't say I find it difficult to do business with my academics. Firstly, my Mom didn't send me to do business in school, I am sent to school to learn. So, my academics comes first before any other thing.

Question: What Business Do You Do In School?

Guest: I sell Data, Cable subscription, Chin Chin and also help students do their assignment.

Looking at all these, while it's true that they come with stress and challenges, my academics is also taken into consideration and of paramount. Though, my department- Political Science comes with its stress, but, it's as if I'm used to my course and I never stop learning.

Question: What motivated You To Start Doing Business On Campus?

Guest: I find my answer funny to me myself, because I just felt I need to be self-reliant and to reduce asking money from home. Though, my mum didn't complain, but as a man, I need to hustle; I can't do Yahoo.

Question: How Do you Cope With The Challenges?

Guest: In coping with the challenges, I work with time in whatever I do. I know my time to read and time to work or play. To ease my stress, I don't write notes in class, but I photocopy notes from my friends to read. I also participate in group reading.

The major challenge I see is "Stress". Joining Academics with Business is kind of stressful, especially when they are online works where one will have to log on the Data or Cable site to do. I work with time, my works are done as quick as possible to meet the needs of my clients.

Question: What Keeps You Going?

Guest: I have passion in my business and  academics; I didn't see the shortcomings as challenges to stop me, they rather help me to build up my learning process.

Question: Will You Encourage Other Students To Emulate You?

Guest: Hmmm, I won't advise such because we are different when it comes to learning. I learn fast. So, advising someone that doesn't learn fast to do business will be harmful to him/her. But, doing business is good. I love it.
