The Law Students' Society Obafemi  Awolowo  University is a Student body known to be committed  to the overall welfare  of her members.
IFELAW  as it's  fondly  called has over the years  been a pacesetter among  other sister faculties  through her value oriented  events.

It  is in this same bend that the  leadership of the  Society has deemed it fit to co-host "Life After School Series" with the renowned  TOKUNBO ORIMOBI.

for the corporate world. Issues such as: Career Plans, Loyalty, Assertiveness, Diplomacy, Respect for Constituted
Authority, Handling Politics in the Work Place, Handling Criticisms and other related issues are to be on the front burner of the event.

Ifelaw Bags Best Faculty Award, Scoops 15 Individual Categories

The Law Students' Society, O. A. U had overtime shown spirit of excellence in all spheres . In the same bend, on the 2nd of August 2018, the IFELAW Society has it is fondly called, proved that once again.

Observant minds would  agree that the university  community has  been flurried for some weeks now due to the just concluded OAU AWARDS hosted by HOTINC. The nominees of several categories having gone through  several voting processes ranging from  online votings to the offline  balloting.

This year, IFELAW had in record peck of her members  nominated for different categories and also Faculty of  Law  nominated under the  "BEST FACULTY" category.

Interesting  to record that the "Outstanding  Faculty President"  category  was also clinched by the president  of the Law Students' Society, Mr Adedigba Daniel.

Law students, in their usual spirit of unity supported all the nominees from the faculty in all the voting processes and even came out en masse on the day of the award to elicit optimal  support  and motivation.

FACULTY OF LAW WON "THE BEST FACULTY" and  14 individual  categories  were won by the law students nomimees.

​NLCOC Honouree Initiates Annual Award for Ifelaw Best Graduating Student

Carve your name on hearts, not tombstones. The great use of life is to spend it for something that will outlast it



Obviously, NLCOC '18  has come  and gone but its legacy lives forever in the  history book of our dear society.
The success of the just concluded  NLCOC is not only hanging on the actuality but as well as the precedent that has been laid.

It's noteworthy  that we call the attention of our esteemed members of the society to the momentous and monumental strides incidental to the success of the just concluded conference.

While giving  his address, the Honouree, Dr Liman Hassan Mohammed gracefully assured:

° ​To award the best graduating  law student, hence the Dr Hassan M. Liman's Prize.​

° ​To facilitate  the functionality of legal aid clinic for  faculty of law.​

 ° ​The Honouree  further expressed his unwavering   love and desire to support the Law Students' Society in their bid to provide quality legal education for members of the society.​

The University's Vice chancellor who was represented  by the University's librarian conferred  the title of ​"Wakili of OAU"​ (OAU Ambassador) on Dr Liman Hassan Mohammed.


With this we have once again collectively affirmed our society to be the pacemaker and trendsetter for others.

We are indebted to our dear Honouree  who has made possible this extraordinary inflection in the Faculty's trajectory.


Very few things in life are entirely the work of just one person – and this is no exception, so It is good we pay tribute to the enormous contributions made by our dear Honouree, his team, guest speakers and invited schools.

We would like to say a huge thank you to everyone that has contributed to the success  of the program. Most  especially, the  entire  Law Students' Society for the  unflinching and invariable support.

We hold the belief  that with your unwavering  support, the success  of NLCOC would  be a corollary  to greater feats for our beloved society.

Opatola Peter: SET TO REPOSITION WITH EXPERIENCE AS A MAJOR TOOL

With a smiling face and a calm mien most poker players would die for, Opatola Lex Peter shone bright like a thousand stars answering questions at the presidential debate organized by the society earning applause from admirers and pundits alike. But behind his young, boyish looks, he is an experienced mass communicator with working experience in some of Nigeria's leading media houses. Coupled with leadership experience gained from his time at Ibadan City Polytechnic, Peter no doubt brings robust ideas which could be harnessed to the gain of the society. In a brief conversation with the publicity committee of the Radiant Justice Chambers; Peter makes some revelations about himself and his ambition, as well as his opinion on other issues. Enjoy the excerpts 

JC: Can we meet you

Peter: I am Opatola Peter Ademola, born to Jacob and Theresa Opatola and native of Osun state. I am the 2nd child of 4. I have a degree in Mass Communication from Ibadan City Polytechnic, Ibadan, Oyo state. I have worked as reporter and journalist for Lagos Traffic Radio, Radio Nigeria and Lagos Daily Times. I am a blogger and a multiple award winning poet and writer. I currently have a book that is awaiting Publication.

JC: We understand you'll be vying for the position of the PLO and we'll like to know your reason for contesting for that position

Peter: I came into this faculty as a Jambite witnessing a wide chasm between the Jambites and Predites within the same class. An anomaly that if elected I want to correct in the incoming class with a host of programmes that will be released on the manifesto night.

JC: How well do you understand the job description of the PLO?

Peter: The P.L.O is basically a caretaker by necessity of the constitutional provisions of the L.S.S and is in charge of being the stabilizing factor for newly admitted freshmen into the Society and the faculty.

JC: How prepared are you for the demands of the post?

Peter: I believe I am well prepared for the demands of the position. I also believe that leaders are not born but made and as such, I will also learn on the job.

JC: The position of the PLO requires a lot of contact with people. How well do you relate with lecturers within and outside the faculty?

Peter: I have served as a Class rep during a programme at Ibadan Poly before coming into the L.S.S and I must say I have had good experience with lecturers which I will deploy fully to meet whatever needs the incoming fresher's might have

JC: What should LSS expect from you if you eventually get elected?

Peter: I have worked with a lot of people and I work well with people. The L.S.S should expect administrative synergy with chambers, associations, the society itself and even the union. Basically, I will adopt any strategy and befriend anyone as long as it will ensure an excellent administration.

JC: What advantage do you have over the other contestants for the position of the PLO?

Peter: I believe serving as the class coach, I have learnt to work under pressure, Ive developed my team and Ive developed with them. That and my relationship with men of substance within and outside the faculty will be an outstanding factor.

JC: As a prospective successor to the current PLO and a member of the Gentries, what do you perceive to be the most challenging aspects of a freshman's life in the faculty and how do you intend to tackle it?

Peter: Well, I think its the new exposure to freedom for most and the university system. The difficulty of combining social, academic, spiritual and in some cases, political life. I will guide them on these matters early so they can adjust duly.

JC: How would you rate the current administration in terms of performance and commitment to society?

Peter: I would say that I cannot rate them in percentage as that may not be accurate but subjectively speaking they have done well and things can be better.

JC: With less than a month left to proceed to the next level in IfeLaw, have your views of the society been altered in anyway?

Peter: Well, it has been a trying time for us as a society. The strike truncated some of our programmes, we have had internal battles among ourselves but that is the L.S.S for you and I will say my views have not been altered per se but developed.

JC: Moving away from LSS, What's your take on the FG's call to states to establish grazing colonies as a solution to the herdsmen's attack?

Peter: I believe that is similar to a trojan horse being brought in you know, like bringing in people who could at anytime kill us. We do not give land to farmers; we do not give forests to hunters or rivers to fishermen. We should not give grazing areas to herdsmen.

JC: What's your philosophy of life?

Peter: When I find something I am passionate about, I will and must give my all.

JC: Your mentor(s)?

Peter: I have a lot really. But I would say Fela Durotoye for the exigency at hand.

JC: Who is your best lecturer in the faculty?

Peter: So far, I haven't met them all so I cannot judge. But I have seen Professor Odunsi speak at the Fajuyi hall symposium and I think I would give that to him.

JC: Any hobbies?

Peter: My hobbies are writing, reading, learning new languages and singing.

JC: Organizations you belong to?

Peter: I belong to C.A.L.S.A.N and the debate committee

Blessed beyond his lanky frame and dark complexion, Michael Irekanmi Amosun is a promising young man who is very passionate about whatever he does or engages in. This is evident in the number of associations he belongs to and his active participation in them. His passion for service has driven him to present himself for service to the Law Students Society in the capacity of the Public Liason Officer of the society. Getting this busy bee settled for a chat was a herculean task which we eventually surmounted. Nevertheless, we were able to get is opinion on certain issues regarding his candidacy and agenda for LSS amongst others. Enjoy the excerpts

JC: First of all, we appreciate your time for granting us this interview. Can you introduce yourself?

Michael: You are very welcome. My name is Michael Irekanmi Amosun

JC: Michael, word making the rounds say you are interested in an executive post on the LSS Executive Council when the next set of executives come on board

Michael: That's very correct. By the grace of God and mandate of our dear citizen of the Law student society of this University.

JC: And I suppose it's the position of the Public Liaison Officer of the Law Students' Society?

Michael: That's right

JC: Your battle cry into the arena has been "Explosive Innovation". Can you tell us the idea behind this?

Michael: Okay. You see, one thing a bright society of millennial shows as key sign is his/her ability to innovate, birth new ideas and steer them to realization. And the faculty of law even in its progressive state should not stop at any point. So what we are basically saying is that we intend to innovate in all existing areas and also bring about a ground breaking experience for the next generation of budding lawyers in the faculty of law

JC: Whom I presume are the next set of freshmen in the faculty?

Michael: Yes. The very key responsibility of the principal liaison officer.

JC: Briefly Michael, what are the duties of the PLO?

Michael: Okay, The Principal liaison officer is stipulated to majorly take charge of the freshman just being admitted into the faculty, acquainting them with the faculty, and of course taking progressive special instructions from the president in cause of the Law student Society in furthering the cause of the Law student society

JC: And you trust yourself enough to handle this daunting task of guiding hundreds of freshmen throughout their first year at the faculty?

Michael: Yes, it is a daunting task and it is not because for us, it is a concerted effort, we are, by the grace of God, leaning on the shoulders of giants to run a very successful administration by God's grace. And also, it is an entrusted mandate from the very founding fathers of the Law student society of this prestigious University and Reasonable drafter of the sacrosanct constitution of the republic which prefers a sophomore student to take the task. Then it is very doable. And we are very set for the task.

JC: The position of the PLO requires a lot of contact with people. How well do you relate with lecturers within and outside the faculty?

Michael: This comes for me as less problem because of my readiness from day one which has made me familiarize myself with most lecturers before and on resumption. Apart from the fact that I attended the center for distance learning which I leveraged on to know many lecturers/staffs of the university in and out of the faculty, I have also had more one or two contact with a few of them which makes the job lot easier. For everyone we know, there could be help to know another 2. This also applies to Student/Student Leaders across faculties of the University.

JC: Can you give us a peek of what to expect from you if you eventually get elected?

Michael: Basically, Like our creed, ExPLOsive innovation. We would be channeling Innovation to every units that pertains to the freshman in making for the progress of the Society We intend to rebrand some of our programs, and of course introduce some other innovations. You know, it would be a good idea to see to the existing programs like the PLO&I get a new face. Subsequently, the need for drawing educational as much as capacity building plan also remains paramount and we have plans in this direction too. The office of the PLO is one with a distinct responsibilities and for us we intend to channel innovative moves towards every aspects of this responsibilities.

JC: As a freshman in the faculty, what do you consider the most challenging aspect of a freshman's life in the faculty and what solutions do you proffer?

Michael: The most challenging aspects I would say, are fear and uncertainty. Largely, almost every freshman has fear and uncertainty when starting. He/she might do things blindly because he has been told to by someone seemingly better off. So the freshman year is filled with different uncertainty and fear. If not all, at least a good number of us express these fears. This for example would be conquered by one of our programs in our manifesto tagged the IFELAW Mentor & Mentee Scheme. Fear and uncertainty is reduced when one is under the tutelage of a seasoned person already close to or with better understanding of where/ what we intend to be. Every one of us needs a mentor.

JC: You are in the race against some of the brightest heads in your class. What distinguishing quality (ies) do you possess as the deal breaker between you and them?

Michael: Well so, this is true. But then, there is more to service than our academic stints. Yes, it is very important but very reliant. It relies on practical track records of leadership and service to either the community or even a cause. This I think is our major distinguishable factor so as to avoid clueless leadership. From the day one, we have been observing and actively participating in the system to ready us for a task like this. We have not just woken up to the task, we have been prepared for the task, mostly ready for the task ahead.

And more so, the elections of our society is leaving the years of running for office basically by sentiments,  BC's and  popularity. People want to see more, the real work being done. It should be marked that in the forthcoming election, Popularity may FAIL.

JC: What's your perception of the LSS having been a member for almost a year?

Michael: Well, LSS is a very progressive body. I commend our progressive nature. Every member of this society is commendable. However, sometimes, it's disheartening that we may tend to place the interest of the society against personal Interest/Political leanings and it is really not laudable.

JC: What do you mean by placing "the interest of the society against personal interest / political leanings?

Michael: It is quite obvious. You see, where danger waylays the progress of a society is a situation where every person his/her own lot to fill. By this I mean, that in spite of our progressive nature, sadly, we tend to sometimes sweep the interest of the society at large under the carpet to fuel our political camps, or entry-mode cabal. It's not fine. Out there, it would be the Law student society of IFELAW not a political camp, a chamber or a sect. Those would be just a bye-issue, not the main question.

JC: Since one cannot be a judge in his own case, how would you rate the current administration in terms of performance and commitment to society?

Michael: Well, the current administration have done well, they deserve due celebration. They have done to their best in the interest of the society. And still, the administration is still operating so we cannot but expect more things on the table as they wind up for the next administration by God's grace. Of course, there may be things to be improved upon but they have done well.

JC: Moving on to national issues: do you think entrusting key leadership positions of government to the youth would serve as a panacea to national underdevelopment?

Michael: That's a very timely question and there are so more questions to ask ourselves. 

Are the youth ready? Do they have the delivering capacity and competence? Or in Achebe's way, would they be a cliché of themselves when appointed to office? It has always been like this. The generation X (Older generation) has greedily failed but would ours turn a new leaf? 

It is not that straight. Whether young or old, Nigeria needs and deserves the competent leaders. But in case of the age-long ruling and recycling of cabals, and of course in the turn of events in the international scene, yes the competent young ones could be seen as a better way of reshaping the country.

JC: What's your philosophy of life?

Michael: Very simple, Fight daily your own self and WIN to make the world better than the way it is met.

JC: Who are your mentors?

Michael: I have a few number of mentors. My Mum,  Asiwaju Dayo Israel,Teju Oyelakin are some of them.

JC: Any hobbies?

Michael: Yeah, Karaoke/Open Mic, Meeting people, cycling and Reading (For Fun)

JC: What's a typical day like for you and how do you let loose the stress of it?

Michael: It depends, During school, jog lighty in the morning, Take a 2mins test, set out for school, attend to the daily to dos, check my mails before turning in to read (I am trying hard to get a Feeding/Eating plan) But when on break, It can be very tight with projects/programs and assignment before turning in to read later at midnight/dawn.

JC: Who is your best lecturer in the faculty?

Michael: I am just getting to know them very well though, but Professor Popoolas humility thrills me. Mr. M. A Lateef and Dr Yusuff are awesome.

JC: Organizations you belong to?

Michael: Im a member of the Green Advocate of the Institute of Ecology, Ready, Run, Win movement, The Youth wing, International Law student Association (in view), OAU Chess Club, Projection Africa to mention but a few.

Happy to impress his master,

EVERYBODY OUT!! he shouts,

Ifelaw Week '17: Chief Femi Fani-Kayode to Speak at Professor Ademola Popoola Annual Public Lecture (11th Dec.)

"Those that have never experienced love can never understand it. They ridicule it, abuse it, destroy it, reject it, mock it and subject it to contempt. Worst still they envy those that receive it. Poor them, for as the bard said, ’tis better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all." -  Femi Fani-Kayode.

Femi Fani-Kayode was born in Lagos, Nigeria on 16th October 1960 to Chief Remilekun Adetokunbo Fani-Kayode and to Chief (Mrs) Adia Adunni Fani-Kayode.He was christened David Oluwafemi (meaning “the beloved of the Lord”) Adewunmi Fani-Kayode.

He is a lawyer, a Nigerian politician, an evangelical christian, an essayist, a poet and he was the Special Assistant (Public Affairs) to President Olusegun Obasanjo from July 2003 until June 2006.

He was appointed the Minister of Culture and Tourism of the Federal Republic of Nigeria from June 22nd to Nov 7th 2006 and as the Minister of Aviation from Nov 7th 2006 to May 29th 2007.

Chief Femi Fani-Kayode the former Minister of Aviation and Minister of Culture and Tourism of Nigeria was appointed the Director of Media And Publicity at Jonathan/Sambo Presidential Campaign Organisation.

PROFESSIONAL CAREER

After leaving law school in 1985 Femi Fani-Kayode worked in the law firm of the legendary Chief Rotimi Williams in Lagos after which he moved to his father’s Law Firm “Fani- Kayode and Sowemimo”.

There he worked under the direct tutelage of his father and his uncle, the late and highly respected Chief Sobo Sowemimo S.A.N (whose older brother, the late Justice George Sodeinde Sowemimo, was the Chief Justice of Nigeria from 1983 to 1985). Other notable personalities that were trained at this great law firm include Chief Robert Clarke S.A.N, Alhaji Femi Okunnu S.A.N, Seyi Sowemimo S.A.N Justice Moni Fafiade, Justice Niyi Ademola, Chief Kunle Alex-Duduyemi (the wealthy businessman from Ile-Ife, South-Western Nigeria who Chief Remilekun Fani-Kayode mentored and trained), the Oxford-trained and brilliant Gbolahun Alastishe, the Cambridge-trained Abba Kyari (who later later became the managing director of one of Nigeria’s largest banks), the Cambridge-trained Funke Aboyade, the Durham-trained Femi Lijadu and many other senior members of both the Nigerian Bar and bench.

After working there for three years Femi Fani-Kayode was promoted to the position of a senior partner in 1989.

POLITICAL CAREER

Femi Fani-Kayode showed signs of rare courage and distinct traits of leadership very early in life. This was particularly manifested by the fact that in 1987 he set up a group called the “September Club” which was a truly national group made up of many new breed politicians and young professionals in Nigeria and he was elected leader of that group in 1988.

He was one of the most prominent members of the Nigerian National Congress (N. N. C), a major political association and undoubtedly the largest political organization in Nigeria in 1989. He was elected the national youth leader of N. N. C that same year. In 1990, he was appointed as Chief Press Secretary to Chief Tom Ikimi, the first national chairman of the National Republican Convention (N. R. C) and then later in 1991 as Special Assistant to the highly respected Alhaji Umaru Shinkafi, former head of the Nigerian Security Organisation (NSO) and the leading presidential aspirant of the party. In 1996, disturbed by the massive oppression and persecution that the people of Nigeria were being subjected to by Gen. Sani Abacha’s vicious military junta, Femi Fani-Kayode went into self-exile and pitched his tent with the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO) abroad where, together with the likes of the Oxford-trained lawyer Chief Tunde Edu and others, he played a very active role in the fight against Abacha and for the restoration of democracy in Nigeria. He eventually came back to Nigeria in the year 2001 and in that same year, through the auspices of his friend and former Special Adviser to President Olusegun Obasanjo, Chief Akin Oshuntokun, he met President Olusegun Obasanjo who encouraged him about the future of Nigeria and rekindled his faith in the possibility of a truly united and new Nigeria.

In 2002 Femi Fani-Kayode helped to establish and became one of the pioneers of the famous Progressive Action Movement (PAM), a very strong political movement of young, new and dynamic politicians. At the beginning of 2003, Femi Fani-Kayode was appointed by President Olusegun Obasanjo as a member of his presidential campaign team for the 2003 presidential election. After President Obasanjo won that election Femi Fani-Kayode was appointed as the first ever Special Assistant on Public Affairs to the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. Since then he has been highly celebrated in the country for his total loyalty and commitment to President Olusegun Obasanjo and his courageous verbal and written submissions and commentaries. Femi Fani-Kayode is also widely acknowledged as being one of the most brilliant and formidable debaters of his generation. He is a powerful, passionate and persuasive public speaker.

In 2006 he was appointed as the Honorable Minister of Culture and Tourism. That same year after a minor cabinet re-shuffle he was re-deployed to the Aviation Ministry as the Honorable Minister of Aviation where he did an excellent job by bringing to an end the terrible cycle of plane crashes (five in one year) that took place in Nigeria just before he came into that office. He put this achievement down to firstly, insisting on full compliance with safety and security standards in flight operations in the country (and imposed strict sanctions when this was not done)secondly, an excellent, dedicated and loyal team of personal staffers whom he took with him to the Ministry of Aviation when he went there and thirdly (and most importantly of all), divine intervention, which he claims came as “a consequence of continuous and deep intercession by the most dedicated and selfless group of prayer warriors that I have ever come across in my life. They prayed for those horrific crashes to stop and they stopped. God answered those prayers and the blood of innocent Nigerians stopped flowing in unnecessary and avoidable plane crashes. Considering the forces that wanted the crashes to continue, this was a miracle that was second to none. We must give thanks to God”(The Christian Explorer Magazine,2007). He increased the capital base of domestic airliners in Nigeria in order to ensure bigger, safer and stronger airlines in the country and he also fought corruption by exposing a massive N6.5 billion Naira ($55, 000, 000 USD) fraud that took place in the aviation sector just before he came in. For this Femi Fani-Kayode was widely acknowledged and commended but he also earned himself many powerful enemies. As Minister of Aviation he also insisted that Nigerians should be treated with dignity, fairness and respect by all foreign airline operators. He did this with ruthless zeal and they complied fully whilst he was in office. Again as Minister of Aviation he ensured that the largest, most advanced and most sophisticated domestic airport terminal (MM2 Domestic Airport Terminal in Lagos) which is owned and was built by his colleague, Cambridge-trained lawyer and multi-millionaire businessman, Dr. Wale Babalakin s.a.n, was not only built and completed but was also fully commissioned and made functional under his watch as Minister of Aviation. This was despite immense opposition to the project from the more retrograde and conservative forces within the aviation sector and the country. This was a great achievement on the part of Fani-Kayode and an excellent example of the public and private sector partnership policy which was one of the hallmarks of the Obasanjo administration. This airport terminal is undoubtedly the largest and the best equipped domestic airport terminal on the African continent and is certainly the best terminal (whether it be international or domestic) in the whole of Nigeria. On June 30th 2008 Femi Fani-Kayode was invited to appear, together with all the other former and serving Aviation Ministers in Nigeria, before the Senate Aviation Committee to defend, explain and give an account of their tenure as Ministers of Aviation. Femi Fani-Kayode was articulate, factual and accurate at the public hearing, substantiating his forceful assertions with facts, figures, documents, bank statements and due process certificates for every contract that he awarded. He also proved that he left an unprecedented and staggering N7.2 Billion ($60, 000, 000 USD) in the accounts of the ministry’s special intervention fund by the time he left office.

He submitted a detailed analysis and report on the problems of aviation in Nigeria (see memo titled:”My Mandate at the Ministry of Aviation” ) to the committee and his submission shed a lot of light on the workings of the aviation sector and even exposed what he referred to as “a vicious blood cult” within that sector. Femi Fani Kayode assisted the Senate Committee in it’s admirable work by providing essential documents and explanations on virtually every question that he was asked. He did an excellent job at the public hearing (see C. D. of the Senate Aviation Committee public hearing 2008) and was given commendation and applause by many of those that witnessed the proceedings. Since the end of the tenure of President Olusegun Obasanjo’s administration on may 29th 2007, Femi Fani-Kayode has gone back to the private sector and to his legal practice.

I want to sincerely appreciate the organising committee of African Expression Weekend( the Luminary Team and Legal Exponent) for the maturity shown in the Round Table discussion we had on Wednesday 8th of November, 2017.

Members of this class have shown that beyond all odds, the interest of Law Students' Society remain of great preference and that was showcased with all sense of maturity and co-operation.

THE RESOLUTION OF THE CONGRESS OF THE LAW STUDENTS SOCIETY,OBAFEMI AWOLOWO UNIVERSITY ILE-IFE, HELD ON THE 9TH OF NOVEMBER, 2017.

Sequel to the provisions of Section 15(1) of the constitution of the Law Students Society, “the congress shall have the final say in all matters relating to the society in line with the provisions of the constitution” bearing in mind also the provisions of section 15(6) which provides that “all congressional decisions shall be by simple majority vote provided that at a time a quorum is formed in accordance with the constitution”.

The congress thus, after series of intellectual and constitutional fireworks, motions and counter motions hereby make the following congressional resolutions;

1. That for the progress and development of the society, the congress hereby approves the appointment of Mr. Okeke Christian as Chairman, Miss Clementina Uzogor as deputy chairman, and Mr. Tayo Opatayo as Secrertary of the 2017 law week.

2. That there shall be a Panel of Inquiry and investigation which shall be saddled with the responsibility of summoning any member of the society, inquiring and investigating the “controversial LSRC Conference” and shall within 7days  submit its  reports to the congress.

3. That the Audit committee shall audit the LSRC conference and submit copies of audit reports/ findings to the Ad hoc panel of inquiry and Investigation so as to aid the panel to carry out its investigations.

4  That the panel shall present all income, expenditure, and any other revelation incidental to the duty of the ad hoc committee alongside its recommendation for the consideration by the next congress of the society.

5.That congressman Afolabi Abass Kayode, Congressman Adebiyi Tolu, congressman Koye-Ladele Mofeyintoluwa, Congressman Fashoyin Adebiyi and Congressman Binzak shall serve as members of the panel of enquiry and determine the all the internal activities of the panel.

On behalf of the entire members of the Law Students’ Society, Obafemi Awolowo University (LSS OAU), Ile-Ife, we wish to convey our deepest sympathy to you upon the death of your son, our friend, mentor and colleague, OLANIRAN Quadri.

During his five years as  student of the prestigious Faculty of Law, OAU and a year of selfless service as the President of the Law Students' Society, OAU, Ile-Ife (2014/2015 Session), he distinguished himself among his colleagues and other students of the university through his pleasant, enthusiastic and continuing high-quality performance. He was a valued member of the Society, and we can be justly proud of his immense contributions to the growth and development of our quintessential Society. We his junior colleagues, friends and well wishers remember him with respect and admiration and he will be missed by all.

Ifelaw Graduates Win 2017 Reginald Aziza Leadership in Law Scholarship Award

Yesterday, Dr. Reginald Aziza announced Jeremiah Opeyemi Ojo and Abiodun Elijah Adenekan, both graduates of the Faculty of Law, OAU, Ile-Ife as the 2017 recipients of the Reginald Aziza Leadership in Law Scholarship Award.

He took to his instagram page (@reginaldaziza) to announce and upload the awardees' pictures with the following caption:

"We all have a duty to give; to lend a helping hand; to pull the next person up. This duty arises not because of our financial position, but in spite of it. It is a duty I take seriously. Severally, I have been helped up, I have wondered: just what if we all pull the next person up? What if we all listened? What if we all cared?
In fulfillment of this duty, today, I am pleased to announced Jeremiah Opeyemi Ojo and Abiodun Elijah Adenekan as the 2017 recipients of the Reginald Aziza Leadership in Law Scholarship Award.

Both awardees achieved exceptional academic performances at the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, with Jeremiah achieving First Class Honours and Elijah following closely with a CGPA of 4.48. Both awardees attained their stellar performance despite verifiable financial difficulty. Having lost his mother many years ago, Jeremiah survived through university by running a business of printing and making photocopies. Elijah survived in school through menial jobs and teaching in secondary schools and other institutions. The fact that they were able to achieve such stellar performances in spite of their serious financial constraints is simply astonishing and lays credence to their single-minded, unrepentant determination to succeed, for which, I hold gentlemen in very high esteem.

The Scholarship shall cover 100% each of their tuition fees to the Nigeria Law School. In addition, I shall expose both awardees to a network of exceptionally bright, young Nigeria lawyers, who, together with me, shall be providing both awardees tailored and personalised support through their studies at the Nigeria Law School as well as exposing them to scholarship and career opportunities for their further personal and professional development.

I wish to thank all those who have supported this scholarship scheme, and the mentors who would work assiduously to ensure the flame of these gentlemen shines ever brighter in the future.

And to the awardees, a hearty congratulations to you, and thank you for giving me the privilege to be a part of your story.

AN ADDRESS PRESENTED BY THE PUBLIC RELATIONS OFFICER OF THE LAW STUDENTS’ SOCIETY AT  THE  LAUNCH  OF LSS  MEGA  WEBSITE  ON THE 1ST  OF JULY, 2017.

The  35th  president  of  the  United  States  of  America,  J.  F.  Kennedy,  on  Thanksgiving  Day Proclamation in 1963 said and  I  quote,

“As  we  express  our  gratitude,  we  must  never  forget  that  the  highest  appreciation  is  not  to utter words but to live  by  them.”

Beyond  the  lines,  beyond  the  words  creating  this  powerful  quote,  I  have  found  life.  I  have found  a  watchword  and that is what  I  am “living  out”  today.

I  had  the  idea  of  creating  a  mega  website  for LSS  since  I  was  in  part  two.  Then, I  was  learning web  designing  and  development.  Each  time  I  was  practising,  I  always  thought  of  an  LSS  having a  great website. And when the opportunity  presented itself,  I  quickly  grabbed  it. I  give  glory  to  the  Almighty  God  for  the  success  of  this  project.  To  everyone  that  made  this project  a  success,  I  say  thank  you.  Starting  from  the  General  Secretary  of  the  Society,  Hassan Yakubu  John  (HYJ),  for  sharing  the  same  dream  with  me,  I  thank  you.  To  His  Excellency, President  Adetunji  Oluwatobi  Paul  (BeeGee)  and  other  members  of  my  family,  LSS  Executive Council,  for  your  support,  love  and  care,  I  am  forever  grateful.  To  the  Speaker,  Rt.  Hon. KENNETH ONONEZE OKWOR IN LLCOC: MEET YOUR SPEAKERS

Kenneth Ononeze Okwor is regarded as the man who did the impossible, as he bagged 10 awards at the call to bar in December 2015 shattering the previous record set 2 months earlier, and being the best graduating student ever! Quite something if you ask me!

He received the “Best Student of the Year” given by 3 donors, “Council of Education Star Prize”, “Prize for 1st Class Students”, “Corporate Law Practice Award” given by 2 donors,”Property Law Practice Award”, “Best Overall Performance”, and the newly introduced “Best Overall Male Student Prize” donated by Nigerian Bar Association (NBA).

Funny enough, he graduated with a Second Class (Upper Division) in Law from the University of Jos (UNIJOS), where he made distinctions in Commercial Law, International Law and the Law of Evidence, and went on to bag a first class from the Law School, where he studied at the Lagos Campus.

Okwor is an Associate at Templars Law Firm, where he has advised on issues relating to Banking and different financing structures, Capital Markets, Corporate Insolvency, Winding up, Mergers and Acquisitions, Projects and Infrastructure, Real Estate, Divestments, Foreign Direct Investments, Legal Due Diligence, Regulatory Compliance, Dispute Resolution, Business Development and general corporate and commercial matters.

He is also an Adjunct Lecturer of Corporate Law and Practice at the Nigerian Law School, Lagos Campus.
Okwor Kenneth Dominic practically changed history at the Nigeria law school Nigerian Law School, Abuja, after he was named the winner of ten prestigious awards.

Previous records includes that of Mavis Abadawho won 7 awards at the october 2013 call to bar ceremony. Fatima Bombom Sani broke the existing record by bagging nine separate awards  at the october 2015 Call to Bar of the Nigerian Law School.  No sooner than two months after at the December 2015 call to bar ceremony, a gentlemen, named okwor dominic, changed this record by seizing ten awards all to himself.

The awards include: the “Best Student of the Year (1st Prize)’’ given by 3 donors, ‘’Council of Education Star", "price for 1st tclass students ’’, “Corporate Law Practice given by 2 donors ”, " property law practice award" and “Best Overall male Student of the Year Award”. The newly introduced Best Overall Male  Students Prizes donated by NBA won by Okwor Dominic made the awards come to a total number of 10 awards.

He was known at the law school at the 'Walking Law Report' also for his astute and confident way of answering questions. In addition to being distinguished with a Red Scroll for making a First class, his parents were honored by the chairman, body of Benchers.

DR. NNAMDI DIMGBA IN LLCOC: MEET YOUR SPEAKERS

Dr Nnamdi Dimgba, a judge of the Federal High Court, Abuja.

He is coming to speak on Competition and Anti-Monopoly Law

Dr. Nnamdi Dimgba is a Partner in the Lagos law firm of Olaniwun Ajayi LP. Graduating in the top 2 of his class at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (Enugu Campus), Nnamdi was called to the Nigerian Bar in September 1999. Recognized as Nigeria’s leading expert on Competition Law, Nnamdi has had a most exciting career and a remarkable mix of experiences. He started his professional career in the Tax and Legal Services Division of Arthur Andersen Nigeria (KPMG Professional Services). Subsequent to his time at Arthur Andersen, Nnamdi joined Olaniwun Ajayi LP as a Senior Associate and the Head of the Enterprise Practice Group, and in this capacity, led teams that provided legal advice in the areas of Taxation, Mergers and Acquisitions, and on various transactions in the fields of Corporate and Commercial Law, Corporate Restructuring and Insolvency law. After his initial time at OALP, Nnamdi joined another premier commercial practice, PUNUKA Attorneys & Solicitors, as Partner in charge of its Capital Markets, Banking and Finance Practice Group, and was actively involved in both the contentious and advisory aspects of the Group’s work. An Oxonian, Nnamdi holds a BCL degree from the University of Oxford (Worcester College), a Certificate in US Law and Legal Methods from Suffolk University in Boston, USA and a PhD in Competition Law from the University of the West of England (UWE), Bristol, where he was also a Law Lecturer in Corporate and Competition Law until 31 August, 2006. Nnamdi is a recipient of numerous scholarships and awards including the Shell Centenary/British Chevening Scholarship to the University of Oxford, the DFID Scholarship to the University of Cambridge, Doctoral Research scholarship, UWE Bristol, among others. He has been extensively published locally and internationally in the fields of Nigerian competition and securities laws. Nnamdi is currently serving as the Chairman of the Competition Law Committee, Section on Business Law of the Nigerian Bar Association.

Anthony Ikemefuna Idigbe is the Senior Partner of the firm and has been described as one of the most experienced and well-rounded lawyers of our time. A seasoned legal practitioner with over 30 years experience in Advocacy, Arbitration, Dispute Resolution, Privatization, Capital Markets, Mergers & Acquisitions, Aviation law and Telecommunications, Tony has advised clients on several complex transactions and has earned a reputation for being a thorough bred legal practitioner. He was recently admitted to practice law in Ontario, Canada.

Elevated to the rank of Senior Advocate in 2000, he has worked closely with regulators of Privatization, Capital Markets, Investments and Corporate Finance industries on the one hand, and companies involved in Privatization, Capital Markets, Investments and Corporate Finance transactions on the other hand. He is the Lead Partner of the Legal Advisory Partnership (LAP), a consortium of law firms that provide advisory services to the BPE on privatization process issues. He also possesses wealth of knowledge and experience in Telecommunications Law as well as the workings of the Nigerian Telecommunications Industry, having represented numerous clients in various telecommunications disputes.

Chief Anthony Idigbe graduated from the University of Ife, (now Obafemi Awolowo University), Ile- Ife in 1982 with a 2nd Class Upper Degree (Hons). He also received the Hon. Justice Orojo Prize for the Best Student in Company Law. He finished from the Nigerian Law School, Lagos in 1983 also with a 2:1. He has three Masters of Law degrees from the University of Toronto, Canada (2015); the Robert Gordon University (RGU), Scotland, UK (2012) and the University of Lagos (1988). He also has an MBA from the Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT) Enugu (1997); Diploma in Advertising from APCON (1999), and several international practice diplomas in International Intellectual Property Law, International Commercial Law, International Joint Ventures, International Mergers and Acquisitions and International Capital Markets & Loans; amongst other educational qualifications. He is a Fellow of INSOL International, the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, UK (CIArB), Business Recovery and Insolvency Practitioners Association of Nigeria (BRIPAN), Advertising Practitioners Association of Nigeria (APCON) and the International Bar Association (IBA). He is also a member of the Institute of Directors (IoD), International Insolvency Institute (III), Lagos Court of Arbitration (LCA), Association of International Petroleum Negotiators (AIPN), International Chamber of Commerce, Nigeria (ICCN) among others.

He was the Founder and first Chairman, Capital Markets Solicitors Association (CMSA) from 2001-2006, and now functions as a Trustee of the Association. He also served as President of the Business Recovery and Insolvency Practitioners Association of Nigeria (BRIPAN) from 2011-2013. RECENT APPOINTMENTS

He was recently appointed by the Securities and Exchange Commission as Chairman of the committee to review some legislation/bills including the Investment and Securities Act (2007); the Nigerian Trade and Competition Commission Bill, the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Bill, the Restrictive Trade Practices, Monopolies and Price Control Bill, and other laws/bills relating to Anti-trust and Competition in Nigeria.

He was appointed in February 2012 by the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as a member of the Petroleum Revenue Special Task Force.

JUSTICE BOLAJI RATIFIED AND SWORN IN AS THE LORD JUSTICE OF LSS OAU

Following her election by Justices of the House of Lords (The Judicial Arm of the Law Students' Society, Obafemi Awolowo University), Justice Oyeniran Bolaji, from part 5, was presented before the Law Students' Representative Council (LSRC, The Legislative Arm) for ratification as the Lord Justice (LJ) of the Law Students' Society, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Nigeria.

She was duly ratified by the majority aye of the LSRC at exactly 7:54pm at the LSRC Sitting in the old Moot and Mock Court, Faculty of Law, OAU. Accordingly, at exactly 7:59pm, she was sworn in as the LJ by the President of the Society, His Excellent, President Adetunji Oluwatobi Paul.

BACKGROUND, AIMS AND OBJECTIVES OF LEADERSHIP AND LEGAL CAREER OPPORTUNITIES CONFERENCE

In a bid to live up to its fundamental objective of building up excellent lawyers, the Law Students’ Society of the Faculty of Law, Obafemi Awolowo University has deemed it fit to organize a program aimed and targeted at equipping her members in entrepreneurship, career, leadership and legal opportunities.

The aforementioned becomes more appreciated when we consider the realities of our time - the 21st century. We need no soothsayer to inform us that a lawyer in the world of today may not be able to survive solely on advocacy and what he learns in the four walls of the classroom. Indeed, a lawyer that must thrive in these times must be equipped, not just academically but in career, leadership opportunities and other extra-legal skills.

Consequent upon the above, the Law Students’ Society believes it is apt to organize a Leadership and Legal Opportunities Conference, designed to expose her members and non-students alike to the opportunities that abound in the aspects of Leadership and other novel areas of Life.

The aims of the Leadership and Legal Career Opportunities Conference include the following:

1. To equip budding lawyers with the requisite legal and advocacy skills, proficient knowledge and right values for excellence in the contemporary global practices.

2. To equip law students who will be relevant and can favourably compete in the 21st century establishments.

3. To adequately prepare law students who can contribute to societal development in diverse ways.

4. To expose budding lawyers to other areas of law practice that are less explored.

5. To imbue participants with the exposure of the new vistas in law and career opportunities therein.

6. To imbue budding lawyers with proficient advocacy and career skills for major contribution in the mainstream world of global development.

MY PLO AND I: LETTER OF APPRECIATION BY LSS PLO

TO GOD BE THE GLORY, GREAT THINGS HE HATH DONE!!

It is with great pleasure I write this short article to appreciate each and everyone of you, for making today's programme a huge success.

I thank the invited speakers that contributed immensely to the success of the programme, starting from Mr. Soji Babalola (A lecturer from English Department), Mr. Olaniran Quadri (past LSS President), Mr. Olufade Ibidolapo (former House of Lords Justice), Mr. Wisa (a Google facilitator) among others.

I appreciate all members of LSS Executive Council for their unflinching support, love and care. You guys are wonderful! 

All members of Law Students' Representative Council and all members of the House of Lords that made themselves available. I say thank you.

Equally, I celebrate all members of the Society present at the programme. Thank you for being there.

Also, I appreciate my Freshers for your full support and for coming out en mass. It is my prayer that GOD will see you through your journey in the prestigious Faculty of Law.

THE PRESIDENTIAL ADDRESS AT MY PLO AND I

I consider it a great privilege to extend to you an hand of fellowship into not just the foremost law faculty in Nigeria but also one of Africa's best. I in fact do not find myself in the danger of a committal of fallacy by stating that this faculty belongs to the ranks of Harvard, Yale and Cambridge Law Schools. Indeed, the facts speak for themselves.

Our achievements within the country as well as off the shores of Nigeria has given us a global reputation making us a cynosure of all eyes. Successes at national and international moot and mock competitions, an array of the nation's best legal educators and a rich variety of intellectualism, activism and political sensitivity among students amongst several others are a testimony to the aforementioned. Little wonder we were adjudged the best law faculty in Nigeria four times in a row!

Consequent on the above, I congratulate you on your entry into the assembly of the learned, the gathering of intellectuals and the community of noetics.

Progressively, as you settle in to commence your voyage to the bar, I enjoin to approach your stay here as a steeplechase race with exams and levels being the hurdles and water jumps ahead of you and your graduation and eventual convocation being the finish line.

It is worthy of emphasis that no part of this race is worth toying with. No hurdle is less important or less deserving of your time and energy. Approach each exam, each test, each assignment, each level with renewed vigour and perspicacity. Regard them all as being instrumental in your race to convocation. Always have the end in sight, for only that way can you keep your attention and focus on the goal.

In addition, you need no soothsayer to inform you that in this voyage you have started, there would be storms and blizzards in your path. Its only too normal! What matters is how well you can navigate your ship in the midst of these storms. It has been opinionated that what differentiates achievers from failures is their attitude to challenges and problems. I agree totally! Do not be afraid of challenges, they are there to make you better!

Penultimately, as new recruits of IFELAW, I encourage you to make use of the manifest opportunities that abound in the faculty in developing and making yourselves better. Committees such as the Moot and Mock committee and the debate committee would hone your lawyerly and public speaking skills. The emergence of specialized clubs such as the Tax Club, Intellectual Property Law Club, Alternative Dispute Resolution Club also provides you a chance at proficiency in different areas of law. There are also Chambers and Societies you could belong to. The goal is to keep building yourself.

I see no better way to end this piece than to quote the words of Martin Luther King Jnr. who animadverted, "if you can't fly then run, if you can't walk then crawl, but whatever you do, you have to keep moving forward."
