Why Life Insurance Policy will put a smile on your face - The importance of insurance

One of the best ways to save is to invest and "Insurance" has been proven to be one of the bests that guarantees a genuine reward for your investment.

This article will explain the meaning of insurance, importance and why people do insurance.

What is Insurance:

Insurance means to protect against loss. It's a an agreement by the Insurance company (Insurer) to compensate the insured against loss.

What is life Insurance?

Life insurance is an agreement between the "Insurer" - person who seek Insurance and  the "Insured" - the insurance company - it thus cover the life of the latter. It offers financial aid in case of the death of the policyholder during the term of the policy, to the beneficiary. This is why having a life cover is a must for every earning individual.

Insurance: Why Life Insurance will put a smile on your face; insurance policy

Having life Insurance should be embraced by people, especially the working class. No one can tell what tomorrow holds in store, hence need be for Insurance to hold what comes forth.

Why you need life Insurance in UK, US, Nigeria, China:

Across the US, the UK, and other developed Countries, Life Insurance has been top on the Citizens' bucket list. While most African Countries are on a low rage in embracing Insurance, though the Elites among them are into Insurance.

But, the Insurance ought to be embraced by everyone. These are reasons why it should be top on your list:
  • For Health care: As we all know that getting sick is really expensive, especially in the United States, United Kingdom, Philippines and almost all African Countries. With the World filled with many Viruses, sickness and other mental issues, taking some critical illness, like stroke, ulcer, cancer, and others as case study, the medications required and medical bills of those illnesses cost a lot.
  • For medical treatment:  with all the illness list above, Will savings and salary be enough to cover those? I guess no for the low income earners. But If yes, then that is good for you. If not, then where will you get the money? Are you ready to sell your hard-earned  properties like house, cars and sacrificed your dream to travel? I guess not right? So that is where life Insurance comes in.

Here is how insurance policy works:

With life Insurance, they will give you the money when you will be diagnosed with a critical illness that would help your medications.

Research has shown that while some developed Countries have some structures created by their Government on some sickness, most African Countries are used to selling off their properties to pay medical bills.

Here are some of the  reasons why people Invest in Life Insurance:

  1. Backup Plan: Health is wealth indeed, and buying a life Insurance is one of the most important financial decisions you can have as a backup plan to fall back on.
  2. Life savings: Chances of you getting your life Insurance later is not promised because uncertainties are part of our day to day life. You may be healthy now but the chances of you being healthy tomorrow is not guaranteed, only God has that. Once you get ill, the chances of you being insured are dropped to 0%.
  3. Affordability: Also, the younger you buy, the cheaper your life insurance - With your younger age and a healthier you, higher chances of you receiving an approval for your insurance application is within your reach. Doing life insurance at old Age does not hold benefit.
  4. Peace of Mind: With life insurance, you secured a peace of mind - Eventhough sickness, illness, injury, accident, and death happen to you, you have this assurance that you and your family will be financially supported. With the help of life insurance, daily worries of "what ifs" in  your life is minimized and even put to rest. Your mind will be calm to some extent.
  5. Supplementary Retirement Goals: Having a happy retirement is the primary desire of all workers. Everyone wants to have a happy and adequate retirement funds. While building your dream retirement funds, you have the financial security should uncertatin events happen in your life.
To clear doubt, investing in life insurance should not be perceived as a burden but rather a necessity. Protecting you and your family from any risks that might happen is an indication of what's important to you and what you love the most.

In life, there is no better thing than having a peace of mind, knowing that whatever life throws at you, you still have a better situation to fall back on.

What are you still waiting for? Make life Insurance top on your bocket list today. Life Insurance is one of the most important pillars of security for your loved ones, should an unfortunate fate befalls you.

Importance of Life Assurance:

With a Life Insurance policy, not only do you secure your future, but you also ensure your family is taken care of after, in the event of a tragedy coming your way. Your life Insurance policy can give your family choices by providing the benefits to help fund your Family bills, fund your Children's college Education, debts, to help meet housing payments and ongoing living expenses.

Also, It becomes a replacement income for your dependents and in certain cases, it also create a source of saving. We are Building a Platform where Young Women can Learn, Grow, and find their Voice - Sia Annie Fangawa Missah Barrie

In this exclusive interview with Sia Annie, she shares her story

Personal Life:

Can you tell us about yourself, your background, and upbringing?

I am Sia Annie Fangawa Missah Barrie, a proud Sierra Leonean, born and raised in Freetown. My upbringing was deeply influenced by my Christian faith, and my parents instilled in me the values of hard work, integrity, and community service. From an early age, I had a passion for helping others, especially children. This passion eventually led me to pursue a career in accounting and finance, as well as dedicate myself to various charitable endeavors aimed at uplifting vulnerable groups, particularly women and children.

What motivates you to wake up every morning?

The drive to create positive change in the lives of the most vulnerable—especially children and young women—motivates me every day. Knowing that I can make a difference, no matter how small, in empowering others and helping them break barriers gives me purpose. Whether it's through the work I do with Annie Wonderland Children Foundation or the empowerment efforts at Annie's Chatroom, I find fulfillment in creating opportunities for others to thrive.

How do you balance your personal and professional life?

Balancing personal and professional life requires discipline and setting boundaries. I've learned to prioritize, whether it's making sure I'm there for my family or ensuring I meet my work responsibilities. I also make time for my hobbies, like reading and singing, which help me stay grounded. My role as a Budget Officer at the Ministry of Finance has also taught me to be strategic with my time, ensuring that I can dedicate enough to both my career and personal commitments.

What's one thing people might be surprised to learn about you?

While I work in finance and accounting, I have a creative side as well. Before starting the foundation, I was actively involved in scriptwriting and acting for Sierra Movie Production. I find that this blend of creativity and analytical skills has helped me approach problems from different perspectives. 5. Who are your role models, and why? My biggest role models are those who are making a tangible difference in the world, particularly women who lead with compassion and drive. People like Oprah Winfrey for her leadership in media and women's empowerment, and Wangari Maathai, who inspired me with her environmental activism and commitment to women's rights. I admire their courage, resilience, and ability to transform lives. Passion and Work: 6. What sparked your passion for women's empowerment and development? Growing up, I saw firsthand the challenges that many women and girls face, especially in Sierra Leone. The lack of access to education and opportunities for women drove me to focus on empowering them. Through Annie's Chatroom, I aim to provide a platform where young girls can learn, grow, and find their voice, enabling them to achieve their full potential. 7. Can you share your experience working with women and girls in Sierra Leone? My work with Annie's Chatroom has been incredibly rewarding. I've had the privilege of working with many young girls who are determined to change their circumstances. We provide empowerment programs and counseling that help them deal with societal pressures, navigate personal challenges, and build confidence. I've witnessed firsthand how these initiatives change lives and uplift communities, and that motivates me to continue this work.

8. How did you come about starting Annie's Chatroom? Annie's Inspirational Chatroom was born out of the need to create a space where girls could connect, share experiences, and receive counseling in a safe and supportive environment. I realized that many young girls lacked access to mentorship and emotional support, so I decided to create this platform to help them grow, both mentally and emotionally, in a world that often marginalizes their voices. 9. What are some of the most significant challenges you've faced in your work at Annie's Chatroom, and how have you overcome them? One of the biggest challenges has been securing consistent funding and support for the programs we run. As a nonprofit, this is an ongoing challenge. However, I've learned to leverage partnerships and build strong networks of individuals and organizations that share the same vision. Through perseverance and dedication, we continue to expand our reach and impact. 10. How do you measure success in your work? Success for me isn't just about numbers; it's about the tangible impact we have on the lives of the girls and women we work with. I measure success by seeing the personal growth and achievements of the girls we support—whether they complete their education, start their own businesses, or simply gain the confidence to believe in themselves. Their success is my success. Sierra Leone Women Summit: 11. What inspired you towards planning the 2025 Sierra Leone Women Summit? The idea for the 2025 Sierra Leone Women Summit came from the need to create a national platform where women can share their challenges, learn from one another, and discuss solutions for common issues. I saw an opportunity to bring women from different walks of life together to discuss leadership, economic empowerment, and social change.

What are the main objectives of the summit, and what do you hope attendees will take away?
The summit's main objectives are to provide women with the tools and inspiration they need to thrive personally and professionally. Who is the target audience for the summit, and what can they expect? The summit is aimed at women of all ages, backgrounds, and professions in Sierra Leone. Whether you're a young professional, an entrepreneur, or a community leader, there will be something valuable for everyone. Expect a dynamic program of workshops, keynote speeches, and networking opportunities.

Can you share some of the exciting speakers, panels, or sessions planned for the summit?
We are excited to feature a diverse lineup of speakers and panelists, including women leaders, entrepreneurs, and advocates for women's rights. There will be sessions on financial independence, leadership development, and mental health awareness, as well as inspiring talks from women who have successfully overcome significant challenges. 15. How do you plan to engage attendees and encourage meaningful discussions at the Summit? We plan to engage attendees through interactive workshops, discussion panels, and real-world case studies. The summit will also include breakout sessions where attendees can collaborate and share experiences, ensuring that every voice is heard. Plans for Attendees: 16. What opportunities will attendees have to network and connect with each other? Attendees will have plenty of networking opportunities throughout the summit, including designated networking sessions, roundtable discussions, and a special networking mixer event. This will allow women to connect, share resources, and build long-lasting professional relationships. 17. Are there any special events, workshops, or activities planned for attendees? Yes, we have a range of exciting workshops, including practical sessions on entrepreneurship, career development, and wellness. We're also planning a mentorship program where experienced professionals can guide younger women in their careers and personal development.

How will the summit address the specific needs and concerns of women in Sierra Leone?
The summit will address the unique challenges faced by women in Sierra Leone, such as access to education, healthcare, and financial independence. We'll provide practical solutions and discussions on how women can overcome these barriers and create lasting change.

What follow-up activities or initiatives are planned to sustain the momentum after the summit?
We plan to establish ongoing mentorship programs, as well as create a platform for continued discussions and collaboration between attendees. Post-summit workshops and online forums will also keep the conversation alive and ensure that the lessons and connections made continue to have an impact.

What's your final message to attendees, and why should they not miss this summit?
This summit is an incredible opportunity for women to come together, learn, and support one another in creating positive change. If you are looking for inspiration, empowerment, and a community of like-minded women, you cannot afford to miss this summit. We are stronger together, and this is your chance to be part of something that will shape the future of women in Sierra Leone.

GetProspa's Corporate Account Features

Individuals, brands and corporates who are interested in partnering with Prospa based on similar mission objectives must understand that Prospa, a fintech start-up founded in Nigeria, has long-term plans to serve the diaspora of African entrepreneurs globally. The company went live in September 2019, and has since been operating on a limited release, onboarding members only. In stealth since its initial launch, Prospa is still growing in Nigeria, where it plans to launch fully “soon”. The start-up’s sweet-spot customers are entrepreneurs and micro-SMEs

According to its co-founder and CEO, Frederik Obasi, Prospa provides the platform, not the bank. As such, the start-up is in partnership with WEMA Bank and ReadyCash to fill in for third-party banking. Obasi says Prospa is in the process of getting its own license. This isn’t to compete with banks – but to expand the scope of its partnerships.

Prospa has members in the UK, the US and Canada – all regions it eventually plans to expand into to serve African entrepreneurs. The start-up has already raised a pre-seed round and is back by New York-based investor, Musha Ventures – which also backs Flutterwave, one of Nigeria’s fintech darlings. Angel investors include David Mortamias, the man behind Mava Ventures, and Danu Temelie. Obasi says that there’s so much talk about products and money raised. Everyone is hell-bent on creating a new brand, but the company wants to focus on spurring prosperity in the wider African community. This is why GetProspa is specific on the investors being authentic and mission-driven.

Alongside London-born Obasi, Prospa was also co-founded by Chioma Ugo, its head of growth who previously served as parliamentary advisor for UK Labour MP Harriet Harman. As well as its chief technology officer, Rodney Jackson-Cole, who has spent the last ten years building products for start-ups across Africa.

Prospa set out to build a platform for African entrepreneurs which manages everything finance-related. The start-up began building out its offering in May 2019.

Getting a business account in five minutes sounds straightforward in Europe, but in Africa it’s still done largely in paper-form,” explains Obasi. Rather than replicate an offline bank online, Prospa decided to build out an entire operating system. “ Operating a ‘business hub-as-a-service’, the hub looks beyond simply making a payment, which it has already taken internationally to more than ten countries including the UK, China, the US, and Kenya. The fintech also offers a marketplace to find suppliers, transaction reconciliation, and visualisation on customer transaction histories to analyse best-selling products and the highest spending customers. The start-up’s sweet-spot customers are entrepreneurs and micro-SMEs which do around a million a year. These businesses can be anything from large machinery importers to make-up artists.

GetProspa's Competition

Since its launch in Nigeria, Prospa has analysed the split of female and male customers. Around 65-70% of its customer base to date is women. Whilst a lot of the highlighted success is male, women are also incredibly hard-working and very entrepreneurial. Some 40% of Nigerian women are entrepreneurs, according to a BBC Africa report in 2017. This makes sense, considering areas of sub-Saharan Africa have the highest female entrepreneurship rate globally. Mastercard’s 2017 Index of Women Entrepreneurs (MIWE) report found Uganda has the highest percentage (34.8%) of women business owners in the world. The East African country also has the highest percentage (90.5%) of female entrepreneurs in the world borrowing and saving money to start a business.

Because Prospa partners with incumbent banks, this means its competition isn’t quite like the competition challengers in Europe or the US face. The competition really lies in the Big Techs, the mega platforms. This is because they have micro-sellers using them for marketing. According to her Growth head, Ugo, Prospa is focused on the business community, whilst a lot of other fintechs in countries like Nigeria and Kenya are still focusing on consumers.

Prospa makes its money through a monthly subscription. Each account comes with different services. The start-up also generates revenue on remittances. Membership fees are based on turnover, and Prospa doesn’t charge a membership fee to businesses turning over less than $200 a month.

Finally, Prospa does not offer loans, international transfers (outside the Naira -₦), POS terminals and cards at the moment, but we will in the near future. Also, you cannot deposit cash currently as Prospa accounts suit businesses that collect and make payments through transfers.
