Oluwaseyi Gabriel Ogundare; Prioritizing Quality Education, the Panacea for human development

The central effort of human capital development is the educational sector. Education is the most powerful weapon to change the world.One in every five of the world's out-of-school children is in Nigeria. Even though primary education is officially free and compulsory, about 10.5 million of the country's children aged 5-14 years are not in school. Nigeria's educational system has not kept pace with the rapid population growth and growing school-age population.

The quality of basic education in Nigeria is extremely poor, leading to low demand and unacceptably low academic performance.

To change this narrative, Oluwaseyi Gabriel Ogundare, a community developer and social development advocate has taken it upon himself to prioritize the education of teeming members of the Owo/Ose constituency and others outside the Constituency. 

In other to contribute his quota to human capital development and change the narrative of education decadence in our part of the world, Oluwaseyi Ogundare, in continuum has offered scholarship awards to indigent students. 

Ogundare, in his quest for the development of his community, single-handedly constructed 4 Blocks of Classrooms and 2 Staff offices in Ijagba/Imoru Comprehensive High School, Distribution of Notebooks to students, payment of Jamb forms, and most recently, a full scholarship award to children of the victims of the Owo Massacre. These are top-notch contributions from an individual without a political office or appointment. 

Without an iota of doubt, Oluwaseyi Gabriel Ogundare’s promises when elected as the lawmaker representing Owo/Ose federal constituency in the National Assembly is no political jamboree. The masses can be rest assured to have a good qualitative and quantitative education with Ogundare at the helm of affairs. Ogundare has promised to employ a participatory approach to enact and sponsor bills that will change the policies on education in Nigeria.

200 Students in Owo/Ose to Receive 50,000 Naira Each Bursary Award from Rep. Adelegbe

Hon. Timehin Adelegbe, honorable member representing Owo/Ose Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives is set to fulfill disbursement of bursary award to no less than 200 students in his constituency.

The Member House of Representatives is also contesting to return to the green chamber for second term.

A statement disclosing the plan and made available to Ondomind reads in part;

"In fulfillment of the several demands placed by Students’ Union leaders across the two Local Government Areas that makes up Owo/Ose Federal Constituency, the Honorable Member Representing Owo/Ose Federal Constituency at the Green Chamber of the National Assembly of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Hon. Timehin Adelegbe has decided to roll bursary awards for Students of Tertiary Institutions of learning, across his Constituency. 

"Students from the two Local Government Areas that makes up the constituency are eligible to apply for the bursary which is targeted at giving a sum of fifty thousand naira (#50,000) to Hundred (200) Students from the Two local Government Areas respectively. The initiative, is aimed at providing timely aids and interventions, especially for Students that are just resuming back to their various institutions after the 8 months long ASUU strike. Therefore, the Students are all required to fill their correct details and follow all instructions in the filling and submission process."Attached to this publication, is the form for application and it is expected to be filled and submitted to the designated email address within the stipulated ultimatum".

ASUU Officially Suspends 8 Months Strike

University Lecturers in Nigeria under the aegis of the Academic Staff Union of University (ASUU) have agreed to suspend the eight-month-old industrial action

According to a member of the union's National Executive Committee, the suspension is expected to be conditional

The union decided to suspend the strike during a meeting of its leadership that started on Thursday night and lasted into the early hours of Friday, 14th October, 2022.

The meeting was called by the union to determine its next line of action after its state branches met over the Court of Appeal ruling last week.

The Court of Appeal had ordered ASUU to suspend the strike before its appeal of the ruling ordering lecturers to resume work can be heard.

Members of the union's National Executive Committee, which comprises the chairmen of the state chapters and members of the national executive, attended the meeting at the ASUU National Secretariat in Abuja.

The Lecturers have been on strike since February 14 this year over what they described as the decay in the University system

WAEC Releases 2021/2022 WASSCE Results

Head of Nigeria National Office (HNO), Mr. Olu Adenipekun, who disclosed this to journalists at WAEC’s Yaba office in Lagos, said out of the 1,590,173 candidates that sat for the examination, 1, 020, 519 candidates obtained credits and above in minimum of five subjects, including English and Mathematics.

 

However, Adenipekun disclosed that results of 180,205 candidates, representing 11.33% of the total number of candidates, were being withheld in connection with various reported cases of examination malpractice, which were being investigated, assuring that the outcome would be presented to the appropriate committee of the Council for deliberations.

2022 UTME: “Exams would not be Rescheduled for Any Reason” – JAMB Tells Candidates

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has said that the 2022 United Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) will not be rescheduled for whatever reasons.

The Head of Public Affairs and Protocol, Mr Fabian Benjamin gave the hint in a statement on Saturday while announcing that the slips for the examination scheduled for Friday May 6 to Saturday May 14 are now available for printing.

While emphasising on the fact that the 2022 UTME would not be rescheduled "for whatever reason", the spokesman also reminded candidates that the ban on prohibited items was still in force.

The prohibited items include flash drives, smart watches, calculators, recorders, mobile phones, spy reading glasses and jewellery among others.

Candidates would be checked in with the Biometric Verification Machine (BVM) in line with the "No biometric verification, no examination" policy.

Mr Benjamin further advised them to prepare ahead and stay close to their examination venues.

"If possible, they should pay a prior visit to their centres before the date of the examination", he said.

New Man Movement Organises 2022 Edition of Gospel Writing Contest

The New Man Movement, in a press release on its website, dated 31st January, 2022 has officially announced a Call for Submissions into the New Man Gospel Writing Contest. 

The 2022 edition of the writing contest which has held yearly since 2016 is a gospel writing contest where creative writers across the genres of poetry, drama, prose and article writing are given a space to show their literary expertise. 

Nelson Vincent Ayomitunde, President of the New Man Movement revealed through the release on the website that the writing contest has evolved to recognise the efforts and excellence of Christian writers as well as showing them to the world thus, propagating the gospel through creative writing.

The New Man writing contest which is in its sixth year is a fully gospel writing contest with the theme, Burning Altars which is taken from the Bible book of Leviticus 6:12.

According to the Press release, entries are open to all Christians and true believers without restrictions to age, race, nationality or location. Submission of entries into the New Man Writing Contest is also free.

Entries into the writing contest are expected to be creatively written in line with the general theme. These entries can be in form of Prose/short story, Poetry, Drama or Essay/Articles All entries are required to be properly typed in Microsoft Word(and uploaded to the submission portal via the ministry's website. 

The press release also indicated that participants in the New Man Gospel Writing Contest are entitled to submit a maximum of two entries ONLY.  Meanwhile, the contest is open for submissions from January 31st till March 11th, 2022.

Tsion Academy Launches Education Fund Bank to Sponsor Out of School Children

In Africa, reports and statistics show that as at 2018, 258 million children were out of school. Today, the numbers are rising geometrically; yet the social, political and economic factors in many African countries are not helping the situation of things.

 

During the COVID-19 pandemic year, Abayomi Adeola Della alongside a team of volunteers started a program in Osogbo, Ilorin and Akure, hosting over 300 children and teaching them Basic Education. Within three months of running, the team realized the increasing rate of out of school children and decided to launch the academy.

To do this, the team lead, Abayomi Adeola Della joined other women to fund the education of 100 children and get them into a mentoring programme with seasoned mentors. Between April and July 2021, they adopted and included over 25 children, putting them into the mentoring programme that ran from April through July 2021.

 

 

If we get more children to school - a school that caters for their academics, life skills and global citizenship education, nurtured with Mentorship, imagine what Africa would look like.

According to the official release, Adeola Abayomi Della's visionary assignment is to establish a FREE and QUALITY basic school for children where they can be groomed on relevant subjects, talents and life skills, having assessed their skills, passion and interests. The school is proposed to kick off from Ile-Ife, South-Western Nigeria, with at least 150 children.

The official release also shows the proposed plan by Tsion Academy to adequately take care of activities that many traditional schools  cannot operate. The team has gathered information and research work about the out of school children since July 2020 and now seeks to establish the free part time school for these out of school children. The Tsion Academy also hopes to focus on teaching the students monetized crafts and exposing them to solving global problems and challenges.

1. To start a *free and quality school* to complement what the children are taught in school but with the mix of teaching them tech, arts and crafts, dance, entrepreneurship and other global opportunities we can plug into that would be relevant to the goal.

2. We would be creating an *Education Fund Bank* that would cater for children whenever they need school fees. We would build a bank that would take care of at least 150 children in low income communities conveniently and keep funding the bank at 3-6 months intervals.

In a bid to provide adequate information for youths to develop their skills, knowledge and attitude to take on leadership roles, organisers of the Catalyst Conference in a press release on Sunday, announced the second edition of the conference.
