JC Interview with Cortez

FOR ADEDIGBA DANIEL, ITS GOLD OR NOTHING FOR LSS

The Golden Benchmark movement spearheaded by Adedigba Daniel is certainly one which has gained grounds within and outside the faculty building of Ifelaw this session. While to some, the vision is driven by the sole aim of clinching political power in the Law Students Society, Daniel declares otherwise in his exposition into what the Golden Benchmark movement stands for. In this brief chat with the editorial committee of the radiant justice chambers, Daniel responds to questions bordering on the movement, his candidacy as well as other issues regarding the nation and his person.

Excerpts

JC: We are very much grateful having you take time out of your very busy schedule to grant us this interview.
Can we meet you?

Daniel: My full pleasures. I am Adedigba Daniel, 400 Level prospective legal practitioner.

JC: We have noticed your movement and we are curious - What is the ideology behind the 'Golden Benchmark'?

Daniel: Great, it simply revolves around the necessity for an administrative touchstone which the future can fall back to as a course of reference.

JC: Can you shed a little more light on it?

Daniel: Golden Benchmark is a mantra and it extends to be a driving force and an administrative propellant. For the accomplishment of every goal, there is a grand need for a propelling force without which you work directionless; so the idea of Golden Benchmark is an insight into administrative expectations which purport to have a legacy in every administrative dealings benchmarked for succeeding generations to fall back to as a course of reference.

JC: LSS has had about 55 presidents and you want to succeed the current one as the 56th. Are you implying that previous LSS administrations did not strike gold, even at 50 with the 50th President?

Daniel: Yes. Our dear society had been administered by 54 presidents and currently running her 55th administrative year. The combined reality is that we are in a Golden Decade in our societal calendar and this further implies the need for a leader with an overall Golden vision for the society premised on first, a viable sustenance of the accumulated goals of the society over the year and Secondly, for the birth of innovative strides.

JC: And you believe, as the arrowhead of the Golden benchmark movement, that you can move LSS to the heights it hasn't attained in its 55 years of existence?

Daniel: Let me say that in the actualization of the vision of the Golden Benchmark Movement, no mountain is insurmountable nor any hurdle too high to jump.

Let me restate that we are ultimately driven by two concerns.

Firstly, the sustenance of our accumulated gains vis-à-vis due acknowledgement of the achievements of the past primarily to wrap our fortunes to our future.

Secondly, to capacitize our societal system for innovative strides.

The second concern revolves around the onset of 'the unattainable'

JC: Can you briefly expatiate on what you referred to as 'the unattainable'?

Cortez: That is from your question as to the heights it hasn't attained

JC: Mr. Daniel, You have served LSS at different times performing in different capacities, most notably as the P.L.O, 2014/2015 session. One may be tempted to ask - Were you not satisfied with the service you put in or you seek a new responsibility?

Daniel: The realities of the office of the P.L.O is quite confined as the administrative jurisdiction is restricted. This time, I am up to the service of the society in its entirety. Service of the office of the P.L.O is done and the achievements are feasible to all particularly for the future to refer. The new calling with which the GOLDEN BENCHMARK MOVEMENT is hinged is a greater calling, a much more compelling urge to service and a graduation to a higher responsibility.

JC: One of the prevalent issues in the faculty is the late release of results. Are there any plans to make sure this issue is resolved or abated?

Daniel: Yes, that is an in-house administrative issue and ultimately the height of diplomacy is needed in the resolution of any issue relating to the administration of the faculty. Over the years of consistent active involvement in the society and the faculty at large, due skills for networking, viable negotiations and irresistible appeal to authorities (where necessary) has been acquired. With that, internal issues are as good as resolved.

JC: During this period, you've been very much accessible. Are we still assured of your continued closeness to the electorate if voted in and that you won't be hijacked by a 'cabal' of friends and acquaintances?

Daniel: My Accessibility is not seasonal nor defined by the tide of time, it is an inherent disposition. One of the majors in the GOLDEN BENCHMARK Creed Is ". . . daily improvement in networking skills as well as consensus building". That can't be separated from accessibility.

JC: How do you respond to criticisms or statements you feel are unjustly made against your person or ideals?

Daniel: We have found ourselves in a setting where criticisms and encouragements are in pari material with judgment of actions. However, I have subscribed for a long time, based on experiences gathered from books wrapped into personal ones, to the position that "A man is his own greatest critic" and no matter how much of a saint you are, there is always a search for a 'but' in your personality and ideology. Consequently, upon due acceptance of my ideas first by myself and by extension to persons to whom the ideas are presented, criticism only make us stronger, it is synonymous to what I call a "personality - check and balance".

JC: On to national issues, can you briefly comment on the legality of the proscription of IPOB as a terrorist group by the Army and by the courts the light of the events leading up to it?

Daniel: What led to the proscription of IPOB is a judicial pronouncement hence, I would view it from the legal perspective.

As much as the constitution provides particularly in Section 1 (2) that the Federal Republic of Nigeria shall not be governed nor shall any person take control of the government of Nigeria or any part except as stated in the constitution, I would affirm so strongly that the proscription of IPOB is faulty in law and should be challenged. I would premise that on the argument that there is no legal entity known as IPOB hence no action could have been instituted against a non-existent legal entity in the first place as such would be tantamount to placing something on nothing and expecting same to stand. The Supreme Court which is the highest on the hierarchy of Nigerian courts has held in many decided cases that "the court cannot proceed against a non-juristic person"

I submit with due respect to my Lords Temporal that it is settled law that the court which is majorly to interprete the law cannot proscribe what in fact does not exist in the eye of the law.

JC: I think, somewhere along the line, you mistook me an examiner in the mound of Dr. Fayokun...

Daniel: (Smiles) It is of National concern and it remains in my national prayer that MAY GOD HEAL OUR LAND

JC: Finally, asides driving which has been comically referred to as your favourite hobby and past time activity, how do you unwind?

Daniel: The best moments are basically those with friends in 'funtellectual' circles. I almost always have something to do, I haven't earned a rest yet and wouldn't unduly take one. Driving is in fact not done in leisure as any moment you see me on the wheels, it is in furtherance of the accomplishment of an assignment- personal or societal.

JC: So, it's safe to say that Mr. Cortez is a workaholic?

Daniel: (Chuckles) it is not safe sir. I am ultimately guided by the Biblical Dictum aptly provided in John 9:4 as to work while it is day.

JC: Thank you for your time Cortez. It's been a pleasure having this chat with you

Daniel: Much more pleasure is mine
