Oladimeji Ajegbile

In 2017, I decided to leave my long term career path in architecture. I didn't have a detailed plan.

I just knew I wanted to explore something different creatively. I felt like there was more in me than the path I was going in. So I stepped away.

The next few years were quiet. I spent them mastering graphic design, user experience, photography, videography. Anything that helped me understand storytelling and visuals better.

There was no audience yet. Just practice.

Then I decided I would start documenting the journey of figuring it out publicly in video form.

Not because I knew it would become anything.

But because I wanted to see my own growth.

I studied creators I admired. I noticed many of them started with what they had. Still, I wanted mine to feel elevated from the beginning, so I started saving for a camera and microphone.

It took almost a year to save.

January 2019, I figured I needed a physical space to house all my creative chaos so I renovated a bedroom in an old apartment my parents owned.

I shared the process publicly. Painting walls, laying carpet, building furniture and figuring things out.

Every day, I posted a 60-second vlog. Nobody was paying me, but a few people were watching.

By February 2019, I stopped waiting. I decided to record my first proper YouTube video on my phone and posted it. I was nervous. I had no clue what I was doing, but I did it anyway.

By the end of 2019, I made a decision. For 90 days straight, I would post one video every single day.

So I studied short-form storytelling. Retention.

Hooks. Editing rhythm. I wasn't chasing brands.

I was sharpening skill.

Then in August 2020, Instagram launched Reels and I reposted all the high performing videos on TikTok I had already created during that 90-day content stretch and my account started growing.

Slowly, then steadily.

November 2020, I received an email from a brand offering me A50K to create a video. At the time, I didn't even understand what a big deal that was, so I declined because I didn't reallu see myself as someone brands paid yet.

I kept showing up, then in 2021, I got an email from someone who had been watching my content for a while. They loved the style and asked for my rate.

I didn't even have a rate card so I just said 150,000 Naira.

They said yes.

I was so excited about it that I created two drafts.

They chose one, I posted it and it performed well.

Just a month later, they paid me again to post the other draft I had already made.

That was the shift. I was getting paid to be myself.

Since then, I've worked with brands like Google, Amazon, Microsoft, HP, Coursera, Fiverr, Monzo.

Not because I reinvented myself, but because I stayed consistent long enough for the right people to notice.

Enabling creatives to amplify their entrepreneurial voice.

My father is a medical doctor and my mother is a civil servant. I have two elder brothers and one younger brother.

Why and how did you create the characters—‘Daddy Ronke’, ‘Mummy Ronke’ and ‘Ronke’?

I create those characters because of the nature of my skits. My skits are usually relatable for entire families, because they involve the mother, father and children. I needed characters that would represent those members of a family.

What’s the story behind your brand name, ‘Omooba’?

I come from a lineage of royalty. Whenever members of family, especially my dad, want to greet me, they call me ‘Aderonke omooba’ (Aderonke, the child of a king). When it was time for me to choose a brand name, I felt ‘Omooba’ would be a perfect fit, because I liked it.

Aderonke started making comedy skits in 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown. I used to make videos and post them on Instagram. However, I took a break in 2021, because of my studies in the university. I resumed content creation fully in May 2022 after my final examination.

Our Guest, Dr. Andrew Abisola shared more lights to FGM.

Quest: What is the origin of this FGM

Guest: Thanks for having me. FGM origin looks obscue though, but there has been anthropological and historical research to help us understand how the practice came about. Some Researchers have traced the origin from the time of slavery, In 1609, where ladies are sewed to prevent them from having any s@xual interco@rse.

FGM is topically attached to religious belief, it is practised in some communities with the belief that it is a religious requirement that must be do; it started before the advent of Christianity and Islam.

Quest: Dr., since It is an old Pratice, why are we still practicing it these days?

Guest: FGM is practised today as a result of the mix religious, Social and  cultural factors within the community space and society. FGM is considered as an important step of raising a girl properly and preparing her for adulthood/marriage

Quest: What are the Effects? Are there positive ones?
