Transitioning into Tech: A Lucrative and Rewarding Path - Enioluwa Odunjo

Today, unlike a few years ago, being a 'Tech Bro or Tech Sis' is considered a lucrative profession. As someone who has been in the field for over four years, way before it became cool to be a techie, I can say that it does offer the opportunity to reach financial freedom quickly.

Transitioning into Tech: A Lucrative and Rewarding Path

With many tech roles affording one the option to work flexibly and remotely, you can earn in different currencies from the comfort of your home.

However, it's important to dispel the notion that going into tech is a shortcut to wealth, as portrayed by the media. While earning foreign currency is an enticing lure into the field, securing a substantial tech role may not be as easy as it seems.

In a particular year I faced over 100 rejections before landing a single job offer. However that season of daily "Unfortunately" emails gave me the required knowledge and resilience to thrive in the field. The insights I gathered from that rejection experience and my eventual acceptance into a number of companies has equipped me to teach other aspiring tech professionals to transition into remote tech jobs. Here are key learnings to help you succeed:

1. Choose your path wisely

Research tech roles that align with your existing skills, leveraging skills you already have will ease your transition. For instance, a copywriter can easily pursue UX writing, and a marketer can explore growth marketing.

2. Dedicate time to Learning

Allow yourself 3-6 months to acquire the necessary skills. Remember, "Pursuit is proof of desire," so invest the required time and effort.

3. Conduct Smart Research

Analyze different job descriptions from various companies and identify commonalities. You'll notice recurring themes such as specific tools and requirements. Compile these and add to your skillset. As you progress, you will no longer need to consult job descriptions to determine your suitability for a role because you already qualify.

4. Build a Strong Portfolio and CV

This can't be overemphasized. Take the time to showcase your best work effectively. Your portfolio plays a pivotal role in opening doors and should not be rushed.

5. Embrace Rejection

Anticipate receiving some rejection emails before securing your first role. Developing a thick skin is essential, as hiring decisions involve various dynamics.

Transitioning into tech can be a challenging journey, but it's the individuals who persist till the end that succeed. For further insights, watch my talk on this.  Feel free to also leave comments or contact me with any questions. All the best!

The Indices of Poverty, Consequential Breach of Fundamental Rights in Nigeria - Adeyeye Eyitayo

Adeyeye Eyitayo

In my family, if anyone becomes seriously ill, we know that we will lose him because we do not even have enough money for food so we cannot afford to use the hospital.
- 35 year old Nigerian Woman.

Nigeria is the most populous black nation with  population of over 200million,heterogeneous and multicultural society covering massive land space in the  Africa continent. Nigeria is equally endowed with natural resources and human capital  sufficient enough to cater for her population if adequately  and judiciously administered. However, the trend of poverty in Nigeria has steadily be on the increase like  wildfire. The dimension of poverty in Nigeria is such that is multifaceted and has permeated through the cycle of  people living within the poverty bracket.

In 2018, statistics from  World Data Lab  confirmed Nigeria as the poverty capital of the world, overtaking India on the world poverty radar, with an estimated 87 million Nigerians, or around half of the country's population living on less than $1.90 a day.

The reality of life for the poor people in Nigeria  is worse than what can ever be imagined. It makes them less of human that could not even enjoy  basic necessities  of life guaranteed by the extant laws of Nigeria and the international community. More than half of the Nigerian population settle in the rural and underdeveloped areas where the quality of life is crude and native, due mainly to extreme lack of basic social amenities. The health care is very poor  compounded by the lack of access to potable water. Educational facilities are insufficient and dilapidated, access to land for agriculture is limited and where available, productivity is low due to poor technology and lack of input. Road network, communications facilities and markets are poorly developed. The list is endless and regrettably government policies have not been  channelled to reverse the  hydra-headed poverty mitigating  against the poor majority in Nigeria.

In effect, the  stroke of  poverty in Nigeria has shattered and battered the fundamental idea of Human Rights, reducing such rights to  "empty rights". Thus, the  notion  of human right has become mere illusion and figment of imagination existing only on paper and not in reality.

Meanwhile,  "Human Rights" are  basic and inherent rights of any human individual, giving access to undeniable necessities such as the right to live, the right to liberty, and the right to  freedom of expression. They are rights that makes life worth  living  for humans in the absence of which life is miserable and worthless.

Regrettably, despite  1999 Constitution's devotion of the whole of Chapter IV to human rights, (similar to the ones in the Universal Declaration on Human Rights UDHR) coupled with a mechanism for its enforcement, these rights remain elusive and meaningless to the poor masses, who remains  the majority in Nigeria.

Since time immemorial, issue of human rights abuses and violations prevails in the Nigerian societal structure. And while most of the world's community see Nigeria as a developing nation, much of the human rights cases still go unreported.

A cursory look at some of the basic Fundamental  Rights which have become illusory to the poor masses.

RIGHT TO FREEDOM OF EXPRESSION
Section 39 of the 1999 Constitution provides for the right to freedom of expression, including the freedom to hold opinions, to receive, impart ideas and information without any let or hindrance. Same right is enshrined and recognized in Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

The government of Nigeria  has severally muzzled this right by clamping down on the masses who protest unpopular policies of government and labour unions who champion the rights of the poor are also subjected to censorship of their private telephones, series of arrests, detention and physical attacks. The prolonged detention of Mr Omoyele Sowore, a journalist and 2019 presidential candidate, by the Federal Government  of Nigeria is a clincher. Mr Sowore was detained for  by  the Department of  State Services (DSS), a specialised security agency under the direct control of the President of Nigeria for over hundred days despite several orders of court demanding his release. Eventually,  he was relunctantly released following serious condemnation from both national and international  community.

RIGHT  TO LIFE
"Everyone has the right to life, liberty and security of person"
------.Article 3 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR)

The 1999 Constitution of Nigeria also insulates this right in section 33.

Despite the importance attached to this right by international community and the domestic laws of Nigeria, this right is however largely unprotected, especially for the poor. Apart from the physical threat to life by acts of extrajudicial killings, the poor are also worst affected by deaths resulting from a chain of causal effects such as lack of adequate food and nutrition, especially  in the core north of Nigeria, lack of access to health, safe and portable water and adequate sanitation, housing and a healthy environment. It is sad to know that malaria kills more than 300,000 Nigerians  annually.

RIGHT TO FREEDOM FROM DISCRIMINATION
The way the poor are marginalized on account of poverty, humiliated when seeking access to government services, and being denied access to information and participation are equally discriminatory of the poor. Needful to recall situations where the rich and people of influence command the attention of the police to achieve their personal interest.

In 2017, a poor man was reported to be relaxing on the balcony of his house somewhere around Agege Lagos state, with a towel tied around his waist, when the police on patrol reportedly picked him for 'illegal sitting' in front of his house. Despite protesting and claiming that he had not offended the law he was taken to the police station and detained, and what was written on the charge board at the police station against his name was 'illegal sitting'. That can only happen to the poor.

RIGHT TO HEALTH
The UDHR in Article 25 provides for  adequate standard of living, which includes the right to health. The enjoyment of the highest attainable standard of physical and mental health to the exclusion of nobody. The risk of getting infectious disease and sickness becomes more possible day by day due to intolerable living conditions and the crude standard of living, which add up to reduce life expectancy for the impoverished density. It is a popular saying that health is wealth.

FREEDOM FROM TORTURE
The resulting effect of poverty in this regard is much more psychological. Effects of torture inflicted by poverty is that which makes an able bodied man/woman to wake up in the morning and not have the smallest clue as to how or where he is going to find a meal to eat the whole of that day, not to mention  day after. What can also be more torturing for a man or woman who is willing to work but finds him or herself a victim of frustratingly prolonged unemployment.

In conclusion, the deleterious  effect of poverty on human rights of the poor man in  Nigeria is inexpressible and can not be captured within the confines of any discourse. The poor hardly enjoy  human rights and neither can they afford to protect against or redress any violation by way of access to justice. Also, the narrative above clearly revealed that a human rights approach to poverty reduction has great prospects if all the rights can be enjoyed and enforced by the poor, because of their potency to make them escape the cycle of poverty.

In theory the Constitution of Nigeria in its preamble talks of promoting  good government and welfare of all persons based on the principles of Freedom, Equality and Justice. But in reality , one sees that it is the powerful, the rich and the dominant class that seem to have all the rights, while for the poor, the weak and the down-trodden,  it seems to be their right to suffer in silence, to be patient and wait for their reward in heaven.

Lack of equality before the law irrespective of social status weighs heavily against the poor, because each time we deflect from equality, we rob the poor of more comfort  than we add to the rich.

Adeyeye Eyitayo is a Law graduate  with irrepressible penchant for human rights.

The Concept of Digital Begging in Nigeria

Digital begging, which is sometimes referred to as online panhandling, is a fast rising trend where individuals seek financial assistance or support through digital platforms. This can manifest in various ways, such as crowdfunding campaigns, donation requests on social media, or even directly asking for money through digital channels.

In a world increasingly connected through the internet, digital begging has become a means for people to share their personal struggles, financial hardships, or specific needs with a potentially large online audience. It leverages the power of social media and online communities to garner support, empathy, and financial contributions.

While some may see it as a way for individuals facing genuine hardships to seek help, others may view it skeptically, questioning the authenticity of these digital pleas. The concept raises ethical considerations, and it's essential for both those seeking assistance and potential donors to exercise caution and verify the legitimacy of such requests.

Ultimately, the concept of digital begging underscores the evolving ways in which people navigate and leverage online spaces to address their financial needs or share their stories of hardship.

How then Can You Identify a Fake Digital Begger?

To

1. Inconsistent or Vague Story

Fake digital beggars may provide inconsistent or vague details about their situation. Look for specific and coherent explanations regarding their financial need, and be cautious if their story seems to change or lacks clarity.

2. Highly Dramatic Language

Watch out for overly dramatic or sensational language. Some scammers use emotional manipulation to evoke sympathy. If the story seems too dramatic or designed to play on emotions, it could be a red flag.

3. Lack of Personalization

Authentic individuals often share personal details and experiences. If a digital beggar's message appears generic and lacks personalization, it might be a scam. Real stories usually include specific details that make them more relatable.

4. No Verifiable Information

A legitimate person in need would likely provide ways to verify their situation, such as links to news articles, medical reports, or other documentation. Be wary if there's a reluctance to share verifiable information.

5.Pressure Tactics:**

Scammers may use high-pressure tactics, urgency, or guilt-tripping to prompt immediate donations. Authentic cases usually allow people to take their time to understand the situation. Be cautious if there's a sense of urgency or if you feel pressured to donate hastily.

Remember, it's important to approach digital begging with a healthy dose of skepticism and compassion. If you have doubts about the authenticity of a request, consider verifying the details or seeking advice from trusted sources before deciding to contribute.

Brain Drain: Causes, Consequences and Conditions for its Exit

Rivers State governor, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike has identified the intractable insecurity situation in Nigeria as one reason why most professionals leave the shores of the country in droves for greener pastures.
The Rivers State governor maintained that welfare of doctors and other professionals are not primarily the sole reasons for brain drain in the country. He noted that because of the looming unemployment situation in the country, most people now opt going outside of Nigeria for the dream job they required.

Even when some of professionals are employed within Nigeria, governor Wike insisted that such persons are not provided with the requisite equipment to use in their various organisations and industries.

"When you talk about brain drain, it is not only associated with the medical profession. So many people leave this country because of unemployment. So many people have left this country because of insecurity. So many people have left this country because where they work the equipment is not there.

"It is not only just because of welfare, that is why you see brain drain, no. It is not correct. Even professors in the university in the various faculties of law, faculties of engineering most of them leave because the tools to work are not there.

“But you are lucky you (RSUTH staff) have the tools here. So, clap for us first that we have provided the basic things. Today, you're lucky, you're working in a teaching hospital where you can find the equipment, at least, to make your job easier for you. So, it is not as bad as where the equipment are not there."

Governor Wike reiterated that it was out of grateful heart that he thanked President Muhammadu Buhari for the release of 13% derivative fund arrears, from 1999 to date, that was never paid by previous administration to States in Niger Delta.

He wondered why saying thank you is an offense and a particular governor feels offended over the thank you said to President Buhari over the release.

The said governor, according to governor Wike had gone in national television to say that money spent to do a 3km road in his State would be used to construct more than 15 flyovers elsewhere.

“Simply because I said you people should thank President Muhammadu Buhari for releasing 13 percent arrears to us. I did not abuse anybody. Did I? All I said is please thank him, that if he did not release this arrears to me and some of our states, it may have been difficult for me to even talk about building a Renal Centre, Cancer and Cardiovascular centre, Basic and Clinical Sciences faculty, House officers quarters. I don’t think saying thank you is an offence.

"On television, I heard one of the governors said in his state to do 3 kilometre road will do more than 15 flyovers. Rivers State, is it not Niger Delta State? Don't we have riverine areas in Rivers State? Amayanabo of Opobo said since he was born, he has never driven by road to Opobo.

"The day he drive by road to Opobo, he said, God is it possible that in my own time I will not go through the river again, I am now driving by road to Opobo. That is a major riverine area. By the grace of God this December (2022) we are going to commission the first phase of Trans-Kalabari Road. That is a major riverine area.

Speaking further, governor said, "I didn't know that people are sick about the flyovers I do. Okay, sorry. I don't want you to be sick again. I won't do again. Instead of you to appreciate and ask somebody how are you doing this, and justify what you're doing.

"I have turned the state capital around using a major construction firm like Julius Berger Nigeria PLC. If you know you have the capacity, if you know you have what it takes go and take Julius Berger and see whether you can pay salary."

Governor Wike pointed to how determined he was in creating the space for medical education that led to the establishment of medical college at the Rivers State University (RSU), which hitherto was not in existence before he assumed office.

"To tell you it is not just flyovers, look at the health sector alone. As at the time we came, this State had no medical college, only the University of Port Harcourt had, and you see how competitive being a federal university. How many of our people get admission to read medicine and other related courses."
About a 100 students of Rivers origin, he informed, at the PAMO university of medical sciences are also placed on State government scholarship, and who upon graduation, are to gain automatic employment into government establishment.

Governor Wike said while equipment are provided, and medical facilities upgraded, the manpower gap is also being filled.

The governor maintained that the current congestion that is experienced at the Rivers State University Teaching Hospital (RSUTH) is being addressed.

He explained that in the coming days, the Gynecology department will move to the Mother and Child Hospital and other departments moving to their dedicated facilities like the Maxillofacial and Kersely Harrison Hospital.

Speaking on the projects, Governor Wike urged Nigerians to seek medical assistance from the Renal/dialysis Centre because it has the best equipment and personnel to offer requisite services.

There is already an ongoing arrangement, governor Wike hinted, towards an effective management of the centre to ensure sustainability.

Governor Wike also advise the house officers to imbibe maintenance culture so that they can always keep the quarters clean and maintain the structure.

In his speech, Chief Medical Director of Rivers State University Teaching Hospital, Dr. Friday Aaron said the two projects inaugurated are signature of the genuine love of governor Wike for the State.

Dr. Aaron recalled that the Nigerian Liquified Natural Gas (NLNG) was already constructing a Renal Dialysis Unit and governor Wike noticed that if allowed in its form, will be limited in the service it will offer.

The CMD said governor Wike directed an expansion of the unit into a world class centre that will diagnose renal cases, perform dialysis and do transplant of kidney. This, he said is because the governor believes that Rivers people deserve the best.

In his address, commissioner for health, Prof. Princewill Chike said the Renal Centre is one of the best in Nigeria that has been provided by governor Wike for his love for the health sector.

The centre, he pointed out, is a one storey building that has lift that can take 13 person per time.

According to him, there are also doctors and nurses call rooms, water treatment unit, and a 6bed space dialysis area.

Prof. Chike also informed that on the first floor, there are two theatres, one is for where kidney donor and recipient are kept, with equipment to ensure the marching of the kidney.

He said the second theatre is where the transplanting of the kidney is done and the situation properly monitored.

Prof. Chike said there is 100kv standby generating set and 30kva inverter with 6 solar plates to ensure regular power supply.

The chairman, Nigeria Medical Association, Dr. Ebi Robinson commended governor Wike for building the Renal centre and equipping it with latest state of the art medical equipment that will enhance the productivity of doctors in the hospital.

Gospel is too Precious to be meddled with the Secular World - Bayo Adegbite

Bayo Adegbite

NNI: Can we meet you?
Guest: I am Adegbite Adebayo Samuel. I'm a 26years old graduate of Political science, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife. I was born into a family of five although, my father is late, as far back as 1997. I'm a Music minister with a passion to preach Jesus all around the world with the sounds of Heaven. I hail from Oyo state

NNI: "But my father is late, as far back as 1997..." With this, how was growing up been for you?
Guest: Well, It was tough, really tough, especially for my mother who suddenly found herself a single parent. It was like the silver spoon was taken away, but nonetheless, she did everything in her power by the grace of God to give myself and my siblings quality education, good morals and taught us to love the Lord. A lot of credit goes to God through her.

NNI: Inspiring! Your mum is indeed a strong woman. I thank God for His grace upon her life.
Guest: Yeah, God be praised.

NNI: What inspired Aninilematanile?
Bayo Adegbite: After completing my  undergraduate studies, I had been trusting God for an unusual grace to compose songs that will bless many around the world. I just want to be a vessel unto honour. One day, as I was heading back home from work, I started singing in the spirit (singing in tongues), a melody then struck my heart, I couldn't stop singing it, but it was still in tongues, so I asked God to help put words of understanding to fit into the melody, and not long after, I remembered a beautiful name of God I got to know in one of rehearsals in the fellowship meeting (RCFOAU) in the university. Aninilematannile! Meaning The Inexhaustible God, The One who is All-Sufficient. That was it! A new song had arrived!!!

NNI: Wow! Interesting. When did you start music?
Bayo Adegbite: I have been involved in music since childhood, in fact every member of family sings really well, but started 2015 professionally when I released my debut single.

NNI: As a gospel artiste, please narrate your salvation experience?
Guest: I got saved through a friend way back 2007. He just showed me love and then I saw how things were working out for him, so I decided to give God a chance, but now I know He gave me chance! No regrets!

NNI: Oh Wow! Who are your music mentors? Your role models in this field?
Guest: My music mentor is my Mother, Mrs Adegbite Stella Olayide, she taught me how to stay on key by dragging me to weekly services to lead the praise and worship lol and Role models are Don Moen, Wale Adenuga and Nathaniel Bassey.

NNI: God, Music and Man... What do you think is the bond?
Bayo Adegbite: God is the originator of music and also the creator of man. The bond here is that, music is one of the most potent weapon in the hands of men to establish and advance the kingdom of God on earth.

NNI: Wow! Recently Tasha Hobbs collaborated with Nicki Minaj. What do you think of gospel artistes collaborating with secular ones?
Guest: I'm not one to judge, but if i could just lend my voice. My stand is that Whatever is Gospel is too precious to be meddled with the secular world. There's a distinct line between we do in the kingdom and what goes on in the secular. We preach Christ, they preach self, so when we involve the secular guys in collaboration, in my opinion I think there's a loss of sense of identity.

NNI: Wow! What's the future of gospel music in Nigeria?
Bayo Adegbite: Beyond words can say or describe!!! There's an army rising in this country. God is raising music ministers after His heart

NNI: And I'm one of them! (smiles)
Bayo Adegbite: Oh yes! Music ministers are churning out great songs. And believe soonest, our songs will change the course of this country, Africa, and the world at large  for good.

NNI: Amen! How do you balance your music with other obligations-- career, etc?
Guest: It's not easy but I'll just say you'll always find time for whatever you love or love doing. So with God's help I try to prioritise well

NNI: What is your greatest challenge as a musician?
Bayo Adegbite: I don't know how best to answer this but, I put a lot of good pressure on myself and the good pressure is to better the person I was yesterday by improving today, but Jesus is up to the task through me. Let me just say, staying positive and motivated in midst of discouragements is my greatest challenge.

NNI: You started in 2015? Wow! That's great. What do you count as your achievements so far?
Bayo Adegbite: I believe my greatest achievements is how the songs God has given has touched the lives of people. Recently someone told how she got baptised in the Holy Ghost with evidence of speaking in tongues while singing one of the songs God gave me. That for me is a great achievement!

NNI: Wow! I love this testimony. Where do you see yourself in next five years?
Bayo Adegbite: Next five years! Well I believe by then by the special grace of God, I would have joined of frontiers in the gospel music ministry in Nigeria and the world at large to keep advancing the kingdom of God through music

NNI: What would you love to say to your supporters and to inspire other musicians?
Bayo Adegbite: To all those who have supported me so far, I want to say a big thank you. I'm immensely grateful. I also humbly ask that you keep praying for me like you've always done. May God keep us all in Jesus name. I love you all.
To my fellow music ministers, we must keep pushing for excellence and trust God for every step we intend take. let's keep raising the banner of Christ, drawing men solely to Him.

NNI: Thank you for your time sir.
Bayo Adegbite: My pleasure
