#LagosLGpolls: Apprehension, as LASIEC withholds results
Apprehension yesterday gripped the political class in Lagos as the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission, LASIEC, held on to detailed results of the council elections 24 hours after the conclusion of polling.
The anxiety nonetheless, there were indications that all 57 chairmanship positions in the 20 local government areas and 37 Local Council Development Areas, LCDAs were won by the All Progressives Congress, APC.
Vanguard gathered last night that Governor Akinwunmi Ambode would inaugurate the chairmen tomorrow. The chairmen are expected to inaugurate the councillors at the headquarters of the respective Local Government Areas and LCDAs.
When Vanguard visited the headquarters of LASIEC at Birrel Road, Yaba, heavy security personnel were seen stationed at various strategic points scrutinising entry into the premises.
The Chairman of the Commission, Justice Ayotunde Philips, (Retd) could not be reached for comment on the reasons for the delay as she was said to be busy putting finishing touches to the collation of the results.
Though, the Saturday council election was generally peaceful, it was however, marred with voter apathy and intermittent downpour which prevented several voters from coming out.
Sources at LASIEC explained that the delay for the announcement may have been connected to slight hitches recorded in some council areas, particularly, Agbado-Oke-Odo LCDA. The rescheduled election took place yesterday.
It was also gathered that the chairman preferred to announce all the results after a comprehensive list most have been collated across the 57 councils, aimed to eliminate speculation.
The spokesman of the Commission, Mr. Dapo Olatunde, declined any comment on the development, saying, the chairman will brief the media as soon as the results are ready for public consumption.
The 12 parties that contested in the council elections were Accord, Action Alliance (AA), Alliance for Democracy (AD), All Progressives Congress (APC), Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Labour Party (LP) and All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA .)
Others were United Democratic Party (UDP), United Progressive Party (UPP ), Kowa Party (KP), National Action Council (NAC) and Peoples Democratic Movement (PDM).
Governor Ambode meanwhile has claimed victory for the APC and congratulated the party on sweeping the polls. The governor said the party swept all chairmanship and councillorship positions underlining what he said was the party’s closeness to the grassroots.
“This victory for us is nothing more than a confirmation of the trust that Lagosians have placed on the party. In that regard, I like to congratulate our great party, the APC for the landslide victory at Saturday’s election in all the 57 Councils,” the governor was quoted as saying in a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Habib Aruna.
