Is Formal Education Truly a Scam?

I met this youngster after a hectic day in school at the domitory, her head buried in her books. Suddenly she screams out, 'what kinda life is this? Who created education in the first place? My mates are out there in the entertainment world making a name and doing other profitable things and I die here in the name of school!' Trying to interrupt her outburst, she quickly added, 'Saddest part is that they end up earning more than we ever could dream of.'
At this point, I needed to disabuse her mindset.

It's actually true that there's a life after school and the present labour market in the country places higher value on your skills and intellectual involvements over grades.

However, the benefits of formal education is glaring unless you choose to shut your eyes at it. it helps you to discover yourself and pursue your passion.

Knowledge they say is power, formal education gives you an edge over those that couldn't pay the price of education because now you're properly informed and knowledgeable. That alone is a foundation on which you can build your mansion of passion.

Education also helps to shapen your time management, social and organizational skills as well as your opinions and perspective. Schooling itself is a ground for networking and improvement. You will only say schooling is a scam if you have only passed through the school without the school passing through you. There are lot of extracurricular activities you can engage in at no cost which can help you prepare for the labour market. If you still think formal education is a scam, then I'm afraid you are the one scamming yourself.

Going through schooling is tough but invaluable. Don't sell yourself short if you ever get the chance to attend!
To pay the price of ignorance...? Ask a pageant manager who was denied her right of making it to the international level with her girl and still could not recover due to stunted knowledge as a drop - out from school.

Awe by Egbewale Muyiwa J

                  AWE

Words fail
Speeches cease
We’re frail
 Our vocal lips are sealed
Marvellous
Is the very thought of you
How so helpless is man!
Who seeks to capture you
With history’s frailest plan;
Words

Just a bit of your creation
Render man speechless
The sparkle of the stars
A jot on the massive sky
Millions stop a bit to dote on.
How much more the Magnificient sight of the clustered galaxies
O Incomprehensible God!
If words are not enough to describe your works
How much more the Worker!

Creator, I’m Awed!
Help me find my voice
In loving letters and sweet sounds
To you.

An Appraisal of Karimu Sunday v. The State

Karimu Sunday v. The state

Judgement delivered by the Supreme Court of Nigeria on 5th of May, 2017.

INTRODUCTION:
This appeal borders on criminal law and procedure.

FACTS:
This is an appeal against the judgment of the Court of Appeal, Ibadan Division wherein the Court dismissed the appeal of the accused/appellant after his conviction and sentence by the High Court of Ogun State.
At the High Court of Ogun State, it was alleged that the appellant who was wearing a black cap, black goggles and a black handkerchief which covered his mouth, on 09/03/04, at about 5pm, went to a cement shop in Ijebu-Igbo, owned by one Ramotalai Alege (PW1), on a motorcycle. Upon arriving at the shop, the appellant alighted from the motorcycle and asked the rider, one Alaba Adesina, to wait for him. The appellant was alleged to have entered the shop on the pretext of purchasing 70 bags of cement from PW1. The appellant requested the cost of the bags of cement and as PW1 was about to take out a calculator from her bag, the appellant was alleged to have snatched her bag containing N3,600 and bolted out of the shop. The appellant then jumped onto a waiting motor cycle in a bid to escape with PW1 in pursuit. The appellant then threatened PW1 with a dagger which he pulled from his back pocket, but PW1 then began to shout for help, which attracted people to the scene. According to PW1, when people started coming to the scene, the person who was waiting with the motor cycle tried to move away with the appellant, but PW2 pulled down the motor cycle and the appellant jumped down and started running away. However, the appellant and the rider were eventually apprehended by concerned bystanders, including an off-duty policeman, who had been alerted by the alarm raised by PW1 and PW2. The rider was apprehended at the scene of the crime, while the appellant was arrested a short distance from the scene of the crime. Upon his arrest, the appellant was taken to the police station along with PW1 and PW2, and the rider of the motor cycle. At the station, the appellant made an extra judicial confessional statement.
At the trial, the appellant pleaded not guilty to the charge. The appellant testified in his own defence but called no other witnesses in support of his case. The appellant however made a bare denial of the charge and sought to retract his extra-judicial confessional statements on the ground that he did not write it. The appellant however, admitted to appending his signature to the confessional statements after they had been read to him by the Police.
The learned trial judge held that the prosecution had proved its case beyond reasonable doubt and convicted the appellant and sentence him to death by handing. Aggrieved by the decision of the High Court, the appellant filed an appeal at the Court of Appeal seeking orders quashing his conviction and the sentence of death passed on him. The Court of Appeal dismissed the appellant's appeal and affirmed his conviction and the sentence of death passed on him by the trial Court under Section 1(2) (a) of the Robbery and Firearms (Special Provisions) Act. The appellant, aggrieved with this decision filed a Notice of Appeal against the decision of the Court of Appeal.
ISSUES:
The appellant distilled four issues for determination. The respondent distilled a sole issue for the determination of the appeal. The Court noted that the single issue of the respondent clearly covers all aspects of questions that need be answered in the determination of the appeal and so the Court adopted the issues formulated by the respondent for the determination of the appeal.
SOLE ISSUE:
This raises the question whether the Court of Appeal or Court below rightly held that the prosecution proved the offence of armed robbery against the appellant beyond reasonable doubt.
DECISION/HELD:
On the whole, the Court held that the appeal lacks merit and it was thereby dismissed. The Court affirmed the decision of the Court of Appeal in its affirmation of the judgment, conviction and sentence of the Accused/Appellant.

OPINION

There issues in the above case will be considered.
1. Was the sentence proportionate to the offence?
2. Did the Courts apply any rule of interpretation to Section 1(2) of the Robbery and Firearms Act?
3. The appeal to the Supreme Court. The appeal against Conviction. Why not the sentence?

The Robbery and Firearms Act clearly specifies the penalty for armed robbery as death by hanging. However, the accused only brought a dagger. The Courts could have realised that no one was stabbed. He only threatened with a dagger and the full wrath of the law is on him. Nothing got spoilt and destroyed then life must go on. The writer opines that he could have gotten a lesser sentence.

On the rule of interpretation the Courts employed, it seems the literal rule. Juris novit curia- it is for the Courts to know the law. Apparently, the penalty for Armed Robbery is death but liniency is in the sceptre of the Courts. Flexibility and reformative justice must be behind every the dispensation of criminal justice. We must have in mind that other things would influence the decision of the Courts.

On the appeal against Conviction, it could have been better if the appeal was against the sentence. The confessional statement of the accused and other evidences pinpoint the fact that he was indeed guilty. Thus, an appeal should have been for mitigation of sentence.

RCCG: Open Heavens Devotional

Here is the open Heaven Devotional guide for today

RCCG: Open Heavens Devotional

• Date: Sunday, 5th February, 2023

• THEME: YOU VS DEATH.

MEMORIZE:
Is there not an appointed time to man upon earth? Are not his days also like the days of an hireling?
Job 7:1

• BIBLE READING: HEBREWS 9:27-28

27 And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment:

28 So Christ was once offered to bear the sins of many; and unto them that look for him shall he appear the second time without sin unto salvation.

• MESSAGE
Death is a very powerful enemy. It is so powerful that (1 Corinthians 15:26) says that death is the last enemy to be destroyed.

That tells you that it is so strong that it would be kept to the very last.

One of the reasons death is so powerful and feared by many is because it is a leveller; it levels everyone. The rich, poor, mighty, kings, servants, beggers and everyone else is levelled by death.

Psalm 49:10 says: For he seeth that wise men die, likewise the fool and the brutish person perish, and leave their wealth to others. Death is no respecter of academic qualifications or achievements when it comes knocking; it listens to no argument. Even Lazarus who Jesus raised after 4 days still died again.

Whether you like it or not, except you are around when Jesus returns to rapture his followers, death will come knocking one day. In both cases however, the result is the same – you will find yourself face to face with God at His judgement seat.

What really makes death so fearsome is that it is permanent. In our Bible reading for today, verse 27 tells us that the moment a person dies, he faces judgement – there are no second chances, no opportunity to try again; it is permanent.

That is why I wonder what people are thinking when they say they want to postpone their salvation or start living holy at a certain time.

Many have said that in the past and died before the time they had planned to start living holy. They are in hell today, regretting it now and for eternity.

You must ensure that you are ready for death whenever it comes Knocking.

Those who are ready will find themselves in paradise when death comes, but for the rest, they will be weeping and gnashing their teeth for eternity (Luke 13:27-28).

Stop telling lies, stop doctoring figures so as to keep some money for yourself, stop committing fornication, stop sinning! When death comes, all these things will not matter anymore; at that point, all that will matter is if your name is written in the book of life.

Surrender your life to Jesus Christ today and commit to following Him to the end. That is the only way to overcome spiritual death and inherit eternal life.

KEY POINT
If Jesus returns or calls you home today, where would you spend eternity – in heaven or the lake of fire?

AUTHOR: PASTOR E.A ADEBOYE.

• BIBLE READING IN ONE YEAR: LEVITICUS 24-25

• HYMN 10: IN CHRIST ALONE.

1 In Christ alone my hope is found
He is my light, my strength, my song
This cornerstone, this solid ground
Firm through the fiercest drought and storm
What heights of love, what depths of peace
When fears are stilled, when strivings cease
My comforter, my all in all
Here in the love of Christ I stand

2 In Christ alone who took on flesh
Fullness of God in helpless babe
This gift of love and righteousness
Scorned by the ones He came to save
Till on that cross as Jesus died
The wrath of God was satisfied
For every sin on Him was laid
Here in the death of Christ I live

3 There in the ground His body lay
Light of the world by darkness slain
Then bursting forth in glorious day
Up from the grave He rose again
And as He stands in victory
Sin’s curse has lost its grip on me
For I am His and He is mine
Bought with the precious blood of Christ

4 No guilt in life, no fear in death
This is the power of Christ in me
From life’s first cry to final breath
Jesus commands my destiny
No power of hell, no scheme of man
Can ever pluck me from His hand
Till He returns or calls me home
Here in the power of Christ I’ll stand

MFM: Mountain Top Life Daily Devotional

Mountain Top Life Daily Devotional

Mountain Top Life Daily Devotional 4 February 2023 By Dr. D.K Olukoya – Don’t Hang Your Harp (I)

• TOPIC: Don’t Hang Your Harp (I) (Mountain Of Fire and Miracle Ministries, MFM Devotional 4 February 2023)

BIBLE IN ONE YEAR: Leviticus 13, Leviticus 14, Leviticus 15, Acts 14, Acts 15, Acts 16

FIRE SCRIPTURE: Mark 15:43-45 (KJV)

43 Joseph of Arimathaea, an honourable counsellor, which also waited for the kingdom of God, came, and went in boldly unto Pilate, and craved the body of Jesus.

44 And Pilate marvelled if he were already dead: and calling unto him the centurion, he asked him whether he had been any while dead.

45 And when he knew it of the centurion, he gave the body to Joseph.

MEMORY VERSE: “Then will I go unto the altar of God, unto God my exceeding joy: yea, upon the harp will I praise thee, O God my God.” – Psalms 43:4

MOTIVATIONAL QUOTES:
It takes a rejoicing harp to give a reassuring sound and music. Don’t hang your harp!

PRAISE AND WORSHIP:
Take praise and worship songs as led by the Holy Spirit

PROPHETIC WORD FOR TODAY:
I DECREE INTO YOUR LIFE, THE VOICE OF REJOICING WILL NEVER CEASE IN YOUR TABERNACLE, IN THE NAME OF JESUS.

MFM Devotional For Today 2023 MESSAGE:

The word ‘harp’ in this context connotes your worship, songs and praises; and any other form through which you reverence your Maker. Beloved, “Where is your harp?” Have you hung it as the children of Israel did in Babylon?” They hung their harps because of captivity, thereby giving the enemies a reason to taunt them. They got discouraged and depressed to the point of hanging their weapon of victory. They asked, “How can we sing the Lord’s song in a strange land?” Probably, you too have been asking yourself, “How can I rejoice and sing in this kind of strange situation? How can I dance, when can’t even afford a three-square meal? How will I worship God, when I don’t have a child?” Plenty ‘hows’ that endlessly go on and on. I understand that it could be difficult to sing and dance during moments of trials but guess what? There is no better time to use your harp than in the midst of trials. There is no better time to use your harp to mesmerize the devil and his cohorts than during moments of tests. It is easy to use the harp, sing and dance during high and up moments of life, but the devil gets perturbed when God’s children defy trials to sing praises to God.

Have the situations you found yourself caused you to hang your harp? Cheer up, beloved. It is time to take hold of your harp and start engaging it in praises to Jehovah. That was what Paul and Silas did in the Philippian jail (Acts 16:16-26) as well as Jehoshaphat and his people (2 Chronicles 20: 1-30). In these two instances, divine intervention and great victories were won for not hanging their harps. Your harp is your weapon of praise, don’t hang it. Your worship is your weapon, fight with it. Your voice of praise is your weapon; engage it to put the enemy of your soul to shame. I pray that as you begin to engage your harp, all the mountains of trials and temptations in your life will begin to melt, in the name of Jesus. Praise God today and you will testify as David did. Cheer up!

PRAYER POINTS:

MORNING

My Father, let Your praises on my lips confuse my enemies, in the name of Jesus.
O Lord, let the power of Your high praises disgrace the enemy concerning my situation, in the name of Jesus.
Thou weapon of praise, arise and silence every evil tongue speaking against my life, in the name of Jesus.
EVENING

I invoke the mystery of divine praise against every power that has vowed that I will not sing my song and dance my dance, in the name of Jesus.
I refuse to hang my harp of joy, in the name of Jesus.
I refuse to be discouraged, in the name of Jesus.
O Lord, let Your praises provoke my testimonies now, in the name of Jesus.
