The Alarming Rise of Cubercrime in Rural Nigeria: A Call to Action by Godspower Oyubu

In the rural community of Mosogar, Delta State, Nigeria, a disturbing trend has emerged. An astonishing 9 out of 10 teenage boys are entangled in cybercrime, with many also succumbing to hard drugs. This has led to a devastating 60% dropout rate among young people, perpetuating a cycle of poverty and desperation.

The situation is further complicated by parents who actively encourage their children to engage in fraudulent activities. One parent, for instance, withdrew her teenage son from school, citing that she wanted him to become a fraudster, believing it to be a more lucrative career path than obtaining a university degree. This misguided mentality has trickled down to primary school children, introducing them to fraudulent acts at an alarming rate.

The consequences of this cybercrime epidemic are far-reaching and devastating:

- Soaring crime rates and social unrest
- Economic instability and stagnation
- Erosion of moral values and social norms
- Decreased educational attainment and opportunities
- Increased substance abuse and health problems

To combat this challenge, a multi-faceted approach is necessary:

1. Government Intervention

Strengthen law enforcement agencies, establish cybercrime units, and implement policies to prevent and prosecute cybercrime.

2. Community-Based Solutions

Collaborate with local organizations to provide education, training, and mentorship programs, focusing on digital literacy, entrepreneurship, and life skills.

3. Moral Guidance

Leverage community influence to promote moral values, ethics, and responsible behavior.

4. Parental Responsibility

Encourage parents to prioritize education, monitor their children's online activities, and foster a culture of integrity and hard work.

5. Mentorship and Guidance

Provide guidance, support, and positive role-modeling to help young people make informed choices and develop a strong moral compass.

The international community must take notice of this pressing issue and offer support to combat the scourge of cybercrime in rural Nigeria. Together, we can:

- Protect vulnerable communities from exploitation
- Promote digital literacy and online safety
- Foster a culture of integrity, hard work, and responsible behavior
- Empower young people to make informed choices and reach their full potential

The future of Mosogar community, Delta State, and Nigeria as a whole depends on our collective efforts to address this pressing challenge. We must act now to safeguard the well-being and prosperity of our youth.

Cyber Security; Virus Is an Attack, There is a need to Update Antivirus Software Constantly - Expert

This article talks about Technology, Virus; and how to prevent electronics from Cyber attack.

What is Technology: Technology has taken over almost the daily activities of human; it is rear to see an Adult that can stay-off the internet or avoid Technology for a day.

No doubt, the World is in a Technological Age and most of our activities and services are now done digitally. Businesses are shifting online with less capital and more protect. With the advent of Metaverse, Mata CEO, Mark seems to recognize more the fact that live is changing and there is need for a change in the conduct of human actives.
With almost everyone and everything depending on Technology, the big question that posses fear is "How protected is the Cyber Space?" This is a great concern for internet Users and Tech Experts are working day and night to improve the Cyber Security network.

Cyber Security; Virus Is An Attacks, There Is A Need To Update Antivirus Software Constantly - Expert
Online Security

Daily News Report had Interview with a Cyber security Expert- Dr. Benson Peters, to discuss on Cyber Security and Antivirus Protection System (APS).

Quest: Good day Dr. Thanks for coming on the programme. Let us begin with Cyber security. Tell us more on it.

Guest: it's my pleasure to be here. On Cyber-security, let's breakdown the two component words; Cyber and Security.

Cyber simply means any internet-connected systems, I mean anything connect to system.
While security equally means protection or guide against anything. Hence, Cyber-security is the guide or protection of any internet connected systems such as Software, Hardware and Data from the hackers. It also means the protection of information, which are stored as softwares on our servers, flash, hard-drives, floppy disc and database from cyber threats or hackers, known as cyber-security.

Quest: How possible can we classify the Cyber Security?

Guest: The cyber security could be classified into the following:

1. Network Security: A network security is to protect ussers, integrity and safety of any network, WiFi and other shared files connected to the network. With network protection, ussers will be free from potential hackers and virus. Some of the Network securities include: Anti-spyware programs, antivirus, firewall, two step verification for applications, etc.

2. We also have Application Security; it's to guide any application from vulnerable virus and threat which may affect the designs and usage of such application. Such applications are designed to maintain and upgrade the security of the App.

Quest: In the cause of our discussion, we shall go into virus more deeply and how to prevent it. But, tell us why we must embrace cyber-security in this Century.

Importance of cyber security
Guest: The importance of cyber security can not be overemphasized, especially in today's World, where everyone is making use of one Technology and the other. With an increasing number of internet users these days, various devices and programs, large amount of data is generated on daily basis; this include personal and sensitive data, personally identifiable information (PII), intellectual property, governmental and industry information systems, passwords and files, to protect all these data from cyberthreat who are also hackers, hence, everyone needs cyber-security.
Without a cyber-security program in place, various organizations; Private and Public establishment cannot defend themselves against data breach, making it an irresistible target for cyberthreats.

Without Cyber-security gadgets and tools, all applications and data are vulnerable to any breach

Some of the benefits of ensuring cyber-security include:
  1.  Networks protection from cyberattacks/hackers,
  2. Prevent unauthorized ussers or network to access,
  3. Business protection from cyberthreat,
  4. Privacy of ussers, customers and employees and visitors to any site is ensured.
  5. Sensitive Data (PII & PHI) is protected from hackers.
  6. It also reduces the risk in organization. That is why most Telecommunications and app developers spend heavily on protection of cyberspace.
  7. With cyber security, it protects business and help for continuity since it will gain more trust from the users.
Quest: Can you help breakdown some ways which cyberthreat can come in.
Guest: Cyberthreat can come in any forms.

How cyberthreat comes
1. Adware: Displaying any advertisements that are based on spying on ussers, with a view to obtaining valuable data and information from users.
2. Malware: some Softwares are designed to infiltrate a computer system and possibly damage it without the user’s knowledge or consent. Some of them include Viruses: it's a code that runs on a machine without the user’s knowledge and infects the computer when executed.
3. Also, Trojan Horse, a malicious software that is designed to disguise as a piece of harmless or desirable software.
4. Spam: These activities that abuses electronic messaging systems,  most commonly through email on phones and computers. Spammers often exploit a company’s open mail relays to send their messages to people. The Google mail App has helped to protect ussers from spam messages by allowing it ussers know that this message is a spam.

Quest: As we prepare to roudoff, let us talk more on Antivirus. Dr., kindly explain to us the term- Antivirus.

What is antivirus
Guest: Antivirus is a software program or set of programs that are designed to protect, prevent, detect and take out malacious software like Trojans, Adware, and software viruses from Application.
No doubt, all these tools are important for ussers to ensure protection of their data and files.

Quest: How does the antivirus work and how can internet ussers use it as protection.
Guest: We must thank most of our App and Tech developers these days, the cyberspace is becoming more secured from cyberthreats. Like I said earlier, the antivirus is to protect applications and system, most of the tools must be installed by users or updated to up-to-date, because a computer without anti-virus software installed will be infected within minutes of connecting to the internet space. Due to the increasing rate of virus these days, the anti-virus companies update their protection tools regularly to deal with the more than 50,000 new pieces of malware created on daily basis.

Quest: We have many companies building anti virus, what purpose does Antivirus serve differently.
Guest: Yes, we now have many Antivirus applications, they worked differently but, they have many things in common. First is to help users scan, detect and remove malacious software. Also, to allow ussers to schedule scans to either automatic or manual performance. It also alert for potential threat, especially to saved passwords that are breached. Google is working more on this and has been providing it ussers with more excellent experiences.

Quest: How do we prevent Virus on Our Devices?

Guest: We can do this in many ways, but core amongst them are:

How to prevent devices from hackers and Virus:
  1. Users should be careful of the application they install on their phones. When installing software, users should choose custom settings over automatic. This is to ensure no spam or corrupt files are included in your installation.
  2. Users must avoid using public storage devices, like general Flash or USB. Don't insert an unknown USB or flashdrive into your computer or phone.
  3. Users must always download all their software and applications from reliable sources on the internet. More importantly, be sure to run your downloaded program through your antivirus software after completion. Thanks to Goggle as well, they help to notify their users and prevent them from downloading untrusted files and app on the Google Play Store.
  4. Users must always read the privacy policy of site or link to know how secured their data is. Some Government agencies are also watching over many of those applications, especially the ones used daily, to know when data are breached and to call to action the owner of such application and site.
Quest: Many thanks for your time with us sir. Lastly, what is your advice to Internet users, Application developers, software and hardware users?

Quest: It's my pleasure to be here Mr. Moderator. Firstly, I will advise all app developers to always improve their security system to protect users.
Internet Users must also embrace security product from a reputable brand to protect their devices from viruses and spyware devices.
To those using any application and micro-blogging site, they should ensure they turn on "two-factor authentication" for such application.
Also, Internet ussers and those using phones and laptops must always update their security settings regularly.

Ogun Festival; Explore The Fun And Scary Epic Culture

This is a complete article on Ogun Festival, it gives an in-depth analysis to the origin of Ogun, with a view to exploring the fun and scary Epic Culture of the Nigerian tribes In West Africa.

The celebration of Ogun Festival across South-West is an epic, but fun moment to watch out for. Ògún in English means - "god of Iron". It is written with two slant strokes at the top of letter "Ò" and "Ú", the stokes on the word is to give the true meaning of the word; as writing the word with the strokes could be translated to many meanings by the reader. Hence, for the purpose of this article, the right work shall be adopted with the strokes - Ògún.

Ã’gún Festival is a well-known festival among the Yorubas in the South-West states and some Igbo tribes in the South-Eastern part of Nigeria. Some of the Yoruba states and localities that do celebrate Ã’gún Festival include: Ondo City, Ile Oluji town, Ekiti state, among others.

Origin of Ògún - god of Iron:

Ã’gún, as the name sounds implies Iron. Hence, Ã’gún Festival is a festival to remember the god of iron. Ã’gún deity is regarded as one of the strongest and brilliant among all the gods the Yorubas believed to have been created by Olódùnmarè (God).  Ã’gún is believed to be a Male god and a very hardworking god.

Research by Daily News Report tells that Ògún is a warrior and a blacksmith. He specializes in iron bending and shaping of iron into various objects. According to the Yorubas, Ògún is hardworking and he performed excellent in his works. He is said to have fought some wars for the Yorubas during the ancient days.

History has it that Ã’gún deity is the first god who paved pathways for Human beings on Earth. In many years back, human beings, to include other gods created by God were said to have been living amidst the bush without no definite way to walk. History also made it known that while Ã’gún and other gods were traveling in the forest and they missed their route, it was Ã’gún that volunteered to take the lead by using his cutlass to clear the bush to pave way for all the gods. Ã’gún never carry last! May I remind you that Ã’gún was the first Man to use iron, Cutlass precisely.

All these works and greatness attributed to Ògún deity had made people to love and worship him. May I quickly remind you that most of the Yorubas who work or trade with iron do worship Ògún.

People who worship Ògún deity are:

  1. Vehicle Drivers
  2. Travelers
  3. Hunters
  4. Blacksmiths
  5. Market Men and Women
  6. Farmers, etc.
Also, most Yoruba states do worship Ã’gún due to his great impact on their lands. And they also believed when you worship Ã’gún, no weapon of iron you work with will harm you and you shall flourish in your business.

Farmers who worship Ògún will have a bounty harvest. Drivers and travellers who worship Ògún will move to and fro on the roads without having accident. Ògún is a god of peace as believed!

In Ondo City and Ile Oluji town,  Ã’gún festival is marked by the Kings (Osemawe of Ondo Kingdom and Jegun of Ile Oluji) and their people on different days. But, history had been recording it that Ã’gún Festival in Ile Oluji do comes before that of Ondo City.

The king isn't the only one involved. There are some households in Ondo City that are core celebrants of the Ã’gún Festival. They are mostly involved in Hunting, Blacksmith, Masquerade etc. Aside those set of people, research by Daily News Report has proven it that over 70% of the Ondo sons and daughters do directly and indirectly participate in Celebration of Ã’gún Festival.

To most homes in Ondo, they believed coming out to watch Ã’gún festival and its celebrants isn't a crime or sin. It's a tradition in Ondo; they believed watching Ã’gún Festival is more of cultural than religion.

Besides, Ògún is more of entertainment than worship. Only those who are the core Ògún celebrants; to include the Monarchs, do perform the traditions and sacrifices during the Ògún Festival. Other people only go out to view them for entertainment purpose.

The sacrifices done and given to Ògún on that day is meant to worship, thank and appease the Ògún deity. Besides, most of the sacrifices given to Ògún is often to make request as well. They are used to request for peace, love, joy, bounty harvest, clear the roads to prevent unwarranted accident, among others. Ògún is said to hate injustice. Hence, he will always fight against injustice for anyone who calls on him with open and clean mind.

Some of the items used in worshiping Ògún includes:

  1. Kolanut
  2. Cold water
  3. Dried rat or fish
  4. Red oil
  5. Palm tree leaf, (Màrìwò)
  6. Dog is an essential item to worship Ã’gún.
In fact, Male Dog and Palm tree leaf are the most essentials of all needed to worship Ogun. interestingly, most of these items feature in Ògún eulogy as well. That is why Ògún is being eulogized in Yoruba as thus with English interpretation.

This is the original Eulogy of Ògún - god of Iron:

  • Ã’gún lákáayé, oshìn gbogbo imolé - god of Iron the leader of all gods
  •  Ã’lómí nilé, fèjèwè - Ye that uses blood to bath when he has no water at home
  • Ã’láso nilé, fimò kímò bora - Ye that uses palm trees
  • Ã’gún ma pamí, ma fèjè mi wè - god of Iron, don't kill me, don't use my blood to bath.
In Ondo City precisely, people do come out in large numbers to view how the Ògún is being celebrated. Those core people you will see on that day include: Masquerades, Hunters, and people with both white and blue powders. Most roads are blocked with Banana trees to prevent passerby and transporters from running away when ògún people want to ask for money. When you fall into the Ògún boys and you don't give them money; they either pour white or blue powder on your body, or they leave you should you plead with them.

It should be noted that Ògún Festival is meant to unite the people. Hence, it is often peaceful, as Ondo Sons and Daughters at home and diasporas do come together to celebrate it.

This is how Ã’gún is worshipped:

Ògún worshippers do set up different irons together in a place, they then turn such into the abode of Ògún. Easy to set up right! To them, they believed Ògún deity will live there. Hence, they worship it there. They offer those sacrifices to the Ògún on that spot of conglomerate irons.

This video clip is a documentary of Ogun cultural celebration in Ondo Town: Credit: Daily News TV

Ògún is believed to be friendly to those honest with him. He hate lies. Hence, to make peace with Ògún, honesty is the core key. The worshippers believed when you are honest with Ògún, and you worship him sincerely, you are safe. So, when next you see an Ògún worshipper, greet them with their usual slang "Ògún yè, mo yè!" meaning - god of iron is safe; hence, I'm safe!
