Updated: Lady Who Jumped Into Lagos Lagoon Had Marriage Proposal Party In Akure On August 27, Rescue Teams Yet To Find Her

The lady who yesterday, jumped into the Lagos Lagoon from Third Mainland Bridge in a suicide attempt has been identified as Adetutu Adedokun, a Department of State Services (DSS) operative. Four months ago, she got commendation from the Director General of the DSS, as the best unarmed combat operative in her set.

It was gathered that Adetutu was proposed to by her fiance in Akure, Ondo State on August 27, 2022.

One of those who attended the marriage proposal party said that it was a blissful night at Heritage Intercontinental Hotel, Akure, where the party took place.

“I don’t know what could have led to her committing suicide because the fiance appeared to love her so much. He even sang for her at a Karaoke Night two days before he proposed to her,”.

Adetutu, who was said to be in her mid-30s jumped into the lagoon from Third Mainland Bridge on Thursday, the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) said.

The Lagos State Government said efforts were unsuccessful as at yesterday. 

She was said to have alighted from a taxi after a heated argument with her fiancé, headed for the railing of the bridge and scaled it into the lagoon.

The Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, Dr Olufemi Osanyintolu, confirmed the incident in a statement.

He said, “Upon the arrival of the Lagos Response Team at the incident scene, investigation revealed that a lady in her late thirties plunged into the Lagos lagoon.

“Further investigation revealed that the lady alighted from an Uber taxi car on the bridge and plunged into the lagoon.

”The driver of the taxi claimed she was having a heated conversation with her fiancé before alighting from the car.

“The LRT, men of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Services, LASWA and officials of the Department of State Services are currently on ground working together to search for the victim.”

The state Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotosho, said rescue teams after intense search and rescue efforts were unable to find the victim.

He said, “The rescue teams called off their search by 7pm because it was already dark. They will continue the search tomorrow (Friday); you know it is water, the wave would have taken the body somewhere else. But we will search everywhere.”

Woman alights from Cab, jumps into Lagos Lagoon

A yet to be identified woman said to be in her thirties jumped into the lagoon on Third Mainland Bridge, Lagos State on Thursday, November 10, 2022.It was gathered that the woman had disembarked from a cab, headed towards the railing of the bridge and plunged into the water.

The Permanent Secretary, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, Dr Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, who confirmed the incident in a situation report said a search and rescue team had been mobilised to look for the woman.

“Upon arrival of the LRT at the incident scene, investigation revealed that a lady in her late thirties (30s) plunged into the Lagos lagoon," he said.

“Further investigation revealed that the lady alighted from a cab on the bridge and plunged into the lagoon,"

The LASEMA boss said the cab driver claimed the woman was having a heated conversation with her fiance before alighting from the vehicle.

“The LRT men of Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, LASWA and officials of the Department of State Service (DSS) are currently on the ground working better together to search for the victim,” he added.

Nigerian lady fired from job in UK for saying ‘I’m strong’ when she was sick

A Nigerian lady has reportedly lost her job in the United Kingdom after sending a message which was misunderstood by her employers.She fell ill and had had been absent from work for three weeks, so she decided to send a mail to her boss explaining why they haven’t been seeing her at the office.

According to a Nigerian Facebook user named Tripple U, who shared the story, the young lady was religious and this reflected in the email she sent that led to her being sacked.

She wrote that she was strong, instead of saying she was sick, and this was interpreted to mean that nothing was wrong with her health yet she chose not to be at work, but her white employers did not know that as Nigerian, she was declaring in faith that she is on the road to recovery.

The wordings of the mail was completely misunderstood owing to what could be called cultural misinterpretation.

Among some Christians in Nigeria, saying ‘I’m strong’ when they are actually ill is usually a way of exercising faith.

But this obviously did not apply in the UK where the lady has been reportedly sacked because her employers read it to mean that she deliberately stopped coming.

Trippie U further noted that the lady, who was working and schooling on a scholarship, is also having issues with her school which she may soon lose owing to the same email.

Police Arrest Suspected Cultists In Ondo

The men of the Ondo State Police Command have arrested three members of Eiye Confraternity while trying to attack some members of the Odua People’s Congress (OPC) in Akure.The suspects were arrested at Abusoro, Ijoka area of Akure while on a revenge mission.

Parading the suspects, spokesperson of the state police command, Funmilayo Odunlami, said the suspects were arrested by a team of defectives.

She said, “On 29th October, 2022, at about 1200hrs, upon information received that some group of Eiye Confraternity were mobilizing to attack some OPC members at Abusoro, Ijoka Road, Akure, on a revenge mission.

“A team of Detectives from SWAT moved to the scene and arrested the following suspects: Adeyeye Deji, Adesuyi Damilola and  Abiodun Lekan .

She noted that two locally made pistols were recovered from their hideout of the cultists

PDP Appeals To Jonathan To Wade In As G-5 Govs Abandon Atiku

With no end in sight to the crisis rocking the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the party’s leadership has concluded arrangements to meet former president, Dr Goodluck Jonathan within the week. Naira Redesign Won't Allow Politicians To Sponsor Thugs – Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari says there is no going back on the planned redesign of the N1,000, N500 and N200 bank notes, adding that politicians won’t be allowed to mobilise resources and thugs to intimidate voters in the 2023 general elections.The President made this known on Wednesday in an interview in the United Kingdom after meeting with His Royal Majesty, King Charles III in Buckingham Palace.

Buhari also said enough time has been given by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) for Nigerians to deposit the present naira notes at banks in exchange for the newly redesigned ones which will be issued by December 15, 2022.

“On this change of currency, there will be a lot of money but time has been given from October to December, three months is enough for whatever money you have, to get it changed through the legal system.

“So, I don’t know why people are complaining about it,” the President said.

We're Monitoring Twitter Under New Owner - Lai Mohammed

The Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, has said that the Federal Government is monitoring Twitter closely under the new ownership of Elon Musk.The FG had in 2021 banned the social media platform, claiming it was being used as a medium to spread fake news and hate speech in an attempt to destablisie the country’s unity.

However, the minister who spoke at a news conference in Abuja on Thursday, said there is no intention of banning the platform again.

The minister reportedly said since the new ownership, he had been asked severally if another ban was coming.

He said, “We have no intention of banning any social media platform again. But we will also not sit by and allow any platform whatsoever to throw our nation into crisis.

Petrol Can't Sell Lower Than N510 - NNPC

The Group Managing Director, Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (formerly Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation), Mele Kyari, has disclosed that NNPC cannot maintain a pump price of N170 per litre for Premium Motor Spirit, popularly called petrol or fuel.Kyari, while speaking at the Legislative Transparency and Accountability Summit organised by the House of Representatives Committee on Anti-Corruption in Abuja on Wednesday, stated that the landing cost of fuel was thrice the amount.

Kyari stated, “It is not possible for you to buy fuel at N170 when your actual cost is thrice that value.

“For instance, today, when PMS comes into this country, we transfer to marketers at N113 per litre for us to ensure N165 at the pump.

“So, you must sell at N113 to them to be able to deliver at N165, that means whatever the cost, anything after that value; that is subsidy. Somebody has to pay for it.

“Everyone knows the price of PMS around the world. There is nowhere today that you can land a litre of PMS to the pumps at the N445 (to a dollar) exchange rate. It is not possible.

“In some places, you are subsidising up to N290 on every litre. With this regime, it is impossible for you to avoid all the wrong things that are happening – round tripping, cross-border smuggling, document forgery.

Rape culture is a social environment in which predominant behavior of sexual violence are normalized and justified fueled by persistent gender inequalities and attitudes about gender and sexuality with cultural norms and institution promoting impunity. Rape cultures are pervasive and deeply rooted in long standing patriarchal belief, power and control. Rape culture treats rape as a problem to be solved through improving the behavior of potential rape victims by making unreasonable sacrifice to avoid sexual assault.

Its examples includes

1. Tolerance of sexual harassment through misogynistic culture, jokes about women bodies, cat calling.
2.  Trivializing sexual assault
3. Defining masculinity as being toxic, crude and razz.
4. Defining feminity as being demure, not cold and subservient.
5. Gratuitous objectification of women as sex objects.
6. Victim blaming (What did she wear? Where did she go?) and refusing to take rape accusations seriously.
7. Teachings on how to avoid getting raped instead of teachings on not to rape.

Rape culture takes many forms; it goes beyond the narrow notion of a man assaulting a woman as she walks alone at night. While people may staunchly agree rape is terrible. Normalizing and trivializing through words, actions, inactions, sexual violence, sexual harassment, and catcalling leads us down a slippery road of rape culture.

Rape culture cross all barrier and it's gender inclusive. We are all part of the rape culture.Why? We all support rape culture whether intentionally or inadvertently. Cat calls, sexual harassment may not necessarily leads to rape, but it is an enabling environment for rape culture to thrive.

Catcalling is a worrisome rape culture that  virtually pervades all university  campuses. It is so disheartening that most students particularly females have experienced this. It manifest itself in heckling, ratings on attractiveness and body parts, lewd sexual jokes, slut shaming, humiliating, rape joke, and inappropriate groping in worse case scenario when victims retaliate by talking back.

Rape Culture and sexual assaults are not simple issues with simple solutions. To disable rape culture, we need to focus more on how do we stop rape from occurring and dismantle the structure that trivialize rape and change the attitude that perpetrate it.

Campaign and awareness needs to be created specifically to teach sexual education, what constitute sexual assault and harassment, subject of consent during orientation week and part and parcel of school programs. Establishing policies on zero tolerance against sexual harassment in its varying form. Universities need to review their sexual violence policy and include factors that will eradicate rape culture.  Just trials with stiff and fast punishment to perpetrators of this act by suspension, rustication or jailing of the students/lecturers depending on the severity of the case will serve as deterrent to others.

As individuals, speak up against rape culture. None participatory excuse is not enough. Speak up on witnessing an harassment or assault. Drop the shitty bro and sis code, orientate and re orientate friends. A mind that truly knows, LEARN, UN LEARN,  and ACT RIGHTLY is a mind that is truly free.

Court Sacks Popular Senator Over defection To APC

Federal High Court sitting in Jalingo, Taraba State, has sacked Senator Emmanuel Bwacha from his legislative seat, for defecting from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).Bwacha is the Senator representing Taraba South at the National Assembly.

The Taraba State chapter of the PDP had since the defection of Bwacha from the party to APC, approached the court to declare the seat of the Senator vacant for dumping the party on which he was elected.

Justice Simon Amobeda in his ruling ordered Senator Bwacha to immediately vacate his seat in the Senate.

US Varsity Expels Student Who Racially Abused Black Colleague

Sophia Rosing, who went viral for racially abusing a black student of the University of Kentucky in the United States of America, has been expelled.Rosing had been seen in a video captured on Sunday physically assaulting the black student and repeating racial slurs.

According to WKYT, the president of the university, Eli Capilouto sent a message out to the campus community on Wednesday, saying, “We have pledged to keep you informed regarding our response to the racist assault captured on video last Sunday on our campus.

"I want to emphasize that this behavior was disgusting and devastating to our community. We stand by our students who were targeted by this unacceptable hostility and violence.

“I write to provide an update on the incident. Ms. Rosing is no longer a student at the University of Kentucky.”

Rosing will also no longer be able to re-enrol in the university.

Fire razes another INEC office in Osun

Some parts of the office of the Independent National Electoral Commission in Ede South Local Government Area, located within the premises of the council area in Oke Iresi, Ede, was on Thursday razed down by fire.It was learnt that smoke was observed from the conference room of the secretariat some minutes to 10am and the firemen were immediately called to the scene.

According to an eyewitness, who preferred not to be named in the press, early response of firemen from Osun State Fire Service to the incident, restricted the fire to only the conference room of the secretariat.

He however said the room was completely razed down with furnitures and some other items destroyed in the fire.

It was further learnt that items like knife, slices of bread, a keg containing petrol and a fez cap were recovered from the scene of the fire, raising suspicion of arson.

The Public Relations Officer of Osun State Fire Service, Ibrahim Adekunle, could not be reached for comment as calls did not go through to his line and he had not responded to a text message sent to him as of the time of filing this report.

The Public Relations Officer of Osun INEC, Seun Osimosu, however confirmed the incident, saying “It is true. REC is on his way to inspect the scene. We will respond appropriately soonest.”

2 POS Robbers Set Ablaze

Two young men trying to rob POS operators at the Independence Layout area in Enugu were, yesterday, set ablaze by angry youths.It was gathered that the angry mobs did not allow the police to take them to their station, but decided to take the law into their hands.

Before setting them on fire, they were first stripped naked, filmed and the video circulated on social media.

The country director of the Global Society for Anti-Corruption, G-SAC, Mrs Amaka Nweke condemned the jungle Justice.

Nweke, however, condemned the attacks on POS operators but said people should not take laws into their hands but hand over such matters to law enforcement agencies.

“I condemn what the robbers do to the POS operators but at the same time, I condemn mob action. They should have handed them over to the police instead of taking laws into their hands,” she condemns.
